IYCEY Awards 2008-2009
What’s the definition of a creative entrepreneur?
Creative entrepreneurs are agents of change in both the profit and non-profit sectors who bridge talent and consumers, links creative ideas to the market, and empower their creative industries. For a better understanding you may want to look at Indonesia’s IYCEY champions’ profiles: Yoris Sebastian, Ridwan Kamil, Leo Rustandi, Gustaff Hariman, Wahyu Aditya, and Deli Makmur.
Can I apply if currently I’m just an employee working in a creative business?

Yes. Although the awards support the development of a strong independent sector it is not necessary for candidates to have their own businesses. You only need to show strong entrepreneurial skill, market awareness, and leadership potential within another company.

I run a fashion business but I am not a fashion designer. Am I eligible to apply?

Yes. Although many applicants will have strong creative backgrounds you will be judged first and foremost on the merit of your entrepreneurial abilities in the creative business.

My Company produces both animation films and games. Can I apply for the Screen and Interactive awards at the same time?

Yes. You can apply for more than one award. However, for every sector you are applying you must complete a separate application form and fill in individual answers. Wahyu Aditya actually applied for both the IYCEY Design and Screen Awards in 2007 and became the national and international winner in the later category.

Is everyone required to take the English test even if they have taken IELTS or TOEFL?

No. If you have an IELTS score of 6 or above taken no later than two years ago, then, you don’t need to take the test. For any other type of test you will still be required to take our English speaking and listening tests.

How are the national and international winner selected?

There are three rounds. On the first round, an independent panel of jury of leading figures in Indonesia’s creative industry, media, and university will select candidates based on their applications. Make sure that you complete all the questions with strong examples and arguments. On the second round, short-listed candidates will be invited to present their visions directly to a second independent panel of jury. Thirdly, if you win the national competition you will then travel to the UK to compete against creative entrepreneurs from other countries. A panel of UK jury will select the international winner.

What are the criteria to select the winner?

The creative champions stand out for their entrepreneurial ability –passionate about their sector, a risk-taker, and offering unique ideas and strong interpersonal skills. They also have strong leadership potential as change agents, an international outlook, and understand the market. For some idea of a winning presentation you may want to look at sample from Wahyu Aditya.

Whom will I be competing against in the UK?

The IYCEY Awards is aimed at emerging economy countries. For each sector in the award there will be 10 national winners -- each representing countries from Asia, Africa, Central Europe, Middle East, and Latin America. For countries you’re competing against this year, look at the awards’ sector definition

If I win the award in the UK what can I use the £ 7500 prize money for?

You will be asked to develop a proposal in collaboration with the British Council to use the grant for training or study in the UK, to develop a tailored project in consultation with UK experts, or to help launch your business in the UK.

Can I reapply even if I have participated in the Awards?

Yes. You can reapply if you didn’t make it into the final round the last time. We would especially urge you to reapply if you got into the final round but didn’t win the national competition. You don’t even have to retake your English test. The catch is that you would need to update your application form to reflect your current professional achievements. Wahyu Aditya did not win the 2006 IYCEY Design Award. In 2007, he reapplied for both the IYCEY Design and Screen Awards only to become the national and international winner in the later category. However, once you win the national competition you are no longer eligible for further awards.
