We have developed our Integrated Equality Scheme to help us promote equality and eliminate discrimination in the areas of gender, race and disability. Find out how we are applying this scheme worldwide.

EOD Policy Orange lozenge left

One of the fundamentals of human rights is the principle that human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.

Here at the British Council our policy is straightforward and inclusive: we support equality and strive to tackle and eliminate discrimination in relation to age, disability, gender, transgender, race, ethnicity, religion, belief and sexual orientation.

We try to create a harmonious working environment and encourage employees to find a fair balance between work and other activities in their lives.

Age

We believe that a mixed workforce of different ages supports better knowledge-sharing amongst younger and older colleagues, creating a stronger foundation to develop and shine. We encourage both our employees and suppliers to avoid age discrimination in the workplace and, where practical, to actively promote age diversity.
 Disability
It is a sad truth that physically and mentally disabled people regularly suffer discrimination because of preconceived opinions about their disability. We are committed to addressing intolerance towards disabled people and, by reducing prejudice, encourage their inclusion in society as well as the workforce.
Gender And Transgender

Whatever the gender or transgender of a person, we believe that everybody should be treated fairly and have access to the same social and economic advantages and opportunities. We respect everyone’s right to coexist in their own preferred gender identity.
 Race / Ethnicity
Discrimination of an individual on the grounds of race or ethnicity ignores the principle that all human beings are born equal. We believe that the workplace should reflect the rich ethnic diversity of society. We ask all employees to take action to include all racial/ethnic groups.
Religion & Belief & Culture

We respect the right of everyone to hold their own religious beliefs or, if they wish, to have no religion or belief. To eliminate religious bigotry we make every effort to encourage religious tolerance and cultural diversity in both the workplace and the communities where we work.
 Sexual Orientation
We are committed to tackling discrimination and harassment towards lesbian, gay and bisexual employees and respect the right of the individual to declare their sexual orientation or not. We try hard to ensure that work practices or policies do not disadvantage individuals of a certain sexual orientation.
Work-Life Balance

We recognise the long term benefits to employees who have found a happy, healthy balance between the time and effort dedicated to work and the rest of their lives. To encourage more staff to achieve this, we have policies related to a range of flexible working arrangements, where operationally feasible.
