British Council organised the Young Scientists Conference on Extreme Weather Events from 26-29 November 2007 at New Delhi. The conference was organised in partnership with Centre for Atmospheric Sciences at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi and the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia UK with support from the British Council’s INYS (International Networking of Young Scientists’ programme). The conference was part of the larger British Council project on Climate Security
Recent occurrences of extreme weather events across the world and their unusual intensities and duration are matters of concern for scientists and society. The aim of the conference was to develop a core group of researchers working in the area of extreme weather events and provide an opportunity to brainstorm on the scientific aspects and impacts of climate change on extreme weather conditions.
The four day conference included presentations by experts and young scientists from the four participating countries, brainstorming sessions, group discussions and field visits.
Researchers from the participating countries have developed considerable work in the area of climate change and had valuable experiences to share. The participants made presentations about their work and enthusiastically listened to those of others. There was a lot of discussion and debate. Both Dr Clare Goodess and Professor S K Dash, the UK and Indian project lead respectively were pleased with the level of discussion and information sharing that took place between the participants during the conference. The participants shared this view.
