The Programme

The Sir Ratan Tata Trust, Mumbai, offers one-year scholarships at the Masters' level for students who want to study in the U.K. in the broad field of Development Studies, with special focus on Development Economics and Science & Technology Studies.

The Scholarships aims to provide opportunities for young people to study/train in a set of academic disciplines with direct relevance to India's future needs.

Preference will be given to students with demonstrated academic excellence, choosing to study in academic programmes, such as for example in Economics Development / Development Studies; Quantitative Development Economics; Science, Society and Development; Science, Technology, Medicine and Society; Social Informatics etc.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible candidates are those who comply with all the following criteria:

1. Indian nationals, domiciled in India, not more than 35 years as on May 1, 2009, with an excellent academic track record with some evidence of extra-curricular achievement. Candidates with work experience in the selected field of study may be preferred.

2. Confirmed admission in the U.K. for any academic course of study in the U.K. in the broad area of Development Studies with special focus on Economics and Science & Technology Studies. The course should be offered full-time in the U.K. and not online or by distance learning.

Selection

Candidates for these scholarships are selected through a process of short listing from the applications received by the British Council, followed by personal interviews, which will be held in Mumbai

Subsequent to the interviews the selection committee identifies the required number of candidates for the awards. The decision of the selection committee will be final. Selection results will be communicated within ten working days following the interview.

Post Selection

The Sir Ratan Tata Trust will make scholarship offers to the selected candidates.

General Notes

The British Council will contact only the short-listed candidates inviting them for interviews.
Short-listed candidates will be interviewed in Mumbai in third week of July 2009. Candidates will be expected to make their own travel and accommodation arrangements.
