Every year the Trust makes between 15 and 20 grants towards the costs of short visits to the UK by academic research scholars and professionals.
These grants are intended as contributions towards the in UK costs of a visit lasting between three weeks and a month. Applicants planning to stay longer are advised to supplement this grant from other sources. They do not cover international fares.
It is worth noting that researchers planning to use libraries such as the British Library can often prepare extensively by using online sources.
Applications are considered from those who are undertaking archival research, consulting UK colleagues, preparing material for publication or who have arranged short attachments to UK institutions. Preference is given to post-doctoral applicants.
Grants (currently £1000) are made at the discretion of the Secretary of the Trust.
Subjects covered - History, literature, archaeology, history of art, philosophy, performing and creative arts. Subject not covered include management, sciences, economics, law, publishing. This is an illustrative list and is intended as a guide.
Among academic applicants preference is given to those undertaking postdoctoral research
Applicants should
- Be Indian citizens, domiciled and resident
- Be aged between 25 and 45
- Have a good knowledge of English
- Have completed their studies and have had four or more years of research or professional experience in their area of specialisation
- State clearly what they wan to do in the UK and how they plan to use the experience on their return to India
- Not have received a grant from CWIT within the last five years
Applications should be made either directly to the Trust by email or through the British Council in India. They should include the following:
- A brief CV including your e-mail address and postal address
- A statement of what you want to do in the UK and for academic researchers which sources you want to consult (maximum 2 pages)
- The names and e-mail addresses of two referees who are familiar with your work
- An assurance that you are within the eligible age range and have not received a grant from the Trust within the last five years
No form is required Applications can be submitted throughout the year and decisions usually made by late March or early April.
There are two three-week scholarships available to pay the fees for this residential school. One is for one term(July or August) of the course: ‘Text and Context: British and Irish literature from1900 to the Present’ and one for the three-week Creative Writing Course in August. Both scholarships cover the course and accommodation fees: participants are expected to pay for their own travel expenses and spending money. Applications should be sent to the local British Council office.
