A Quick Guide on How to Apply

1. Select the scholarship programme (For example: Economic Governance, Finance and Public Administration, Sustainable Development, Science and Innovation & Gurukul Scholarship for Leadership and Excellence) you wish to apply for and check the eligibility criteria to ensure you are eligible.

2. If you wish to apply for more than one scholarship programme, please complete a separate scholarship application for each programme.

3. Applicants for the Masters (Open) Scholarship must apply directly to their chosen UK Institution(s) for admission to your chosen course(s) before applying for a Chevening Scholarship.  Applicants are required to specify this information in order of their preference (up to three) on the Chevening application form.

4. Complete the Chevening Scholarships 2008 application form which can be downloaded from www.britishcouncil.org.in/chevening in word and PDF format.

5. Please make sure you complete all the sections on the application form. WE CANNOT CONSIDER INCOMPLETE APPLICATION FORMS. If some sections in the form are not relevant to the programme you are applying for, please insert “not applicable”.

6. Please submit your completed application form by email chev.application2008@in.britishcouncil.org or post British Council, 17 Kasturba Gandhi Marg, New Delhi-110001 by 14 Dec’07 with clearly marked “Chevening Scholarships 2008”.

7. The British Council will acknowledge receipt of the applications by email only. Please ensure that you provide your latest email id. The British Council are not responsible for failure of on-line delivery.

8. The British Council will contact applicants who clear the first level of short listing by 28 December to submit reference forms. Completed reference forms must be received by the British Council by 14 January 2008.

9. The British Council will further contact only short listed candidates inviting them for interviews. Please do not contact the British Council to enquire about the progress of your application.

10. Interviews will be conducted in New Delhi or in one of the regional offices between February and April 2008. Short listed candidates will be expected to make their own travel arrangements and accommodation bookings. Unfortunately, the British Council is unable to reimburse cost incurred in attending the interview.

11. The decision of the Interview Panel is final.

12. Successful applicants for the Chevening Gurukul Scholarship are required to stay on for one day following the interview to attend a briefing from the Programme Directors.

General Eligibility Criteria

  • Indian national with a valid Indian passport
  • for Masters (Open) Scholarships 21-35 years on 14 December 2007
  • for the Chevening Gurukul Scholarships 28-40 years on 14 December 2007
  • if applying for the Masters course at a UK institution, the course should not be more than 12 months
  • fluency in written and spoken English

You are not eligible if you

  • have already started a course in the UK at the time of application
  • have in the past received a British Government funded scholarship
  • work for the British Government (including the British Council)
  • apply from another country
  • are seeking military training (though military personnel can take academic course at civilian institutions)
  • are applying for part time courses
  • are applying for distance learning
  • wish to study a course of more than 12 months in duration
  • wish to study undergraduate degrees

Additional Eligibility Criteria

In addition to the general eligibility criteria, applicants for Masters programmes should be able to provide evidence/ information on the status of application to the UK University (s) in a related subject at the time of applying i.e. by 14 December 2007. Candidates who get selected for Chevening awards must submit confirmation of admission offers from their chosen university(s) to the British Council latest by 31 May 2008.

Candidate should ideally have at least 2-3 years of relevant work experience in the selected field of study.

Recent graduates must be able to demonstrate exceptional leadership experience through either academic or extra curricular activities.
