Over 35 Climate Champions from 16 Countries (Northern Ireland, Ireland, UK, USA, Finland, Slovenia, Japan, Greece, Bangladesh, Norway, Sweden, Uganda, Nepal, Maldives, Sri Lanka and India) will come together at the Third International Climate Champions Camp in Goa, India from 15 – 21 January 2011. At the camp, these Climate Champions will be exposed to various facets of the fragile ecosystem of Goa and will get the opportunity to learn, network, share and better understand local impacts to this ecosystem due to Climate Change.

They will be interacting with the local scientific, technical and social experts and will also be visiting scientific Institutions like the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) and Goa Science Centre.

Sharing their experiences and staying connected with the world they will be blogging and tweeting from the camp. Towards the end of the camp, they will pen down their views and suggestions in the form of a “Goa Declaration” which will be released to the media at the close of the camp.

British Council in partnership with the Nilgiri Documentation Centre (NDC) organised an International Climate Champions (ICC) camp ‘CLIMATE CHANGE ACTION TRAIL AT THE BLUE MOUNTAINS’ in the Nilgiris from 23 to 30 January 2010. The aim was to enable 35 young leaders from ten countries to understand the impact of climate change on the Nilgiris ecosystem and the role mountain forests play in mitigating the impacts of Climate Change. As a part of the programme the Climate Champions were part of number of skills development and training programmes through out the year. In February 2009 five International Champions attended a training programme in Edinburgh. In India, two similar training workshops were organised for all the champions in Mukteshwar and Chennai. The training workshops provided champions an opportunity to refine their project plans, understand and utilise various project management tools, improve communication and presentation skills and much more.

Climate Champions have made a mark at a number international arenas ranging from UN meetings to the negotiations at Copenhagen. These platforms have given the Champions access to a wider global network of Climate Champions, global leaders and decision makers. They have also given them an insight into various global negotiations and discussions which has widened their knowledge and exposure.

The Climate Champions programme offers young people opportunities to devise and implement projects that address climate change issues and through them delivers local projects which raise awareness of, adapt to and mitigate climate change. By facilitating mutual understanding and knowledge, developing shared engagement and trust and generating solutions through shared creativity, innovation and action, Climate Champions can make a positive difference to people's lives and influence decision-makers to take much-needed action on climate change.
