The British Council, Prithvi Theatre and Tata Photon present renowned British theatre company Complicite's A Disappearing Number, an award winning British play inspired by the legendary mathematical collaboration of Srinavasa Ramanujan and G. H. Hardy.
A Disappearing Number takes as its starting point the story of the most mysterious and romantic mathematical collaboration of all time. Simultaneously a narrative and an enquiry, the production crosses three continents and several histories, to weave a provocative theatrical pattern about our relentless compulsion to understand.
Threaded through this pattern of stories and ideas are questions. About mathematics and beauty; imagination and the nature of infinity; about what is continuous and what permanent; how we are attached to the past and how we affect the future; how we create and how we love.
A Disappearing Number opened at the Theatre Royal Plymouth in March 2007 and subsequently toured to Warwick Arts Centre, Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen in Germany, Wiener Festwochen, Holland Festival in Amsterdam and London. In 2008 it was revived and toured to Barcelona, Ann Arbor, Paris, Milan, Sydney, and a second sell-out London season. It was awarded the Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Play (2007), The Critics’ Circle Theatre Award for Best New Play (2007) and the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play (2008). Read more.
