British Council to conduct MRCS Orientation Course British Council, Kolkata, has now become the second overseas MRCS (Member of Royal College of Surgeons of England) examination centre after Cairo, Egypt. Intercollegiate MRCS has now replaced the Collegiate MRCS examinations. British Council, in association with the Royal College of Surgeons of England, will offer an orientation course to prospective candidates so that they are better equipped for taking the examinations. What is the structure of Intercollegiate MRCS Examinations?
The new Intercollegiate MRCS has three papers:
- Part 1: Applied Basic Science
- Part 2: Clinical Problem solving and
- Part 3: Viva and Clinical.
British Council Kolkata hosts all the three parts of the exam.
What is the time period of completing MRCS?
Candidates who apply under the intercollegiate regulations will have 3 ½ years from their first attempt of Part 2 in which they have to complete all parts of the examination (this holds true even if Part 2 is given before Part 1)

Is IELTS required to do MRCS? No, but if the candidate is going for limited registration with GMC then IELTS becomes mandatory.
What are the eligibility criteria for taking intercollegiate MRCS?
- Part 1: Candidates are required to have MBBS qualification including (including internship) from a WHO recognised college.
- Part 2: in addition to the above qualification they will need to have commenced BST (Basic Surgical Training)
- Part 3: candidates are required to complete 2 years of Basic Surgical Training and also Basic Surgical Skills Course.

The Board fee (£ 130) is to be paid by a demand draft drawn in favour of ‘The Royal College of Surgeons of England’ payable at UK. The local fee can either be paid in Rupees ( Rs 2200/) or in pound (£ 25/) and is to be paid by demand draft drawn in favour of ‘British Council’ payable at UK.
