What is Cambridge ESOL examinations?
Cambridge ESOL stands for Cambridge English for Speakers of Other Languages. It assesses candidate's ability to communicate effectively in English.Cambridge ESOL exams offer the world's leading range of certificates for learners of English. There is total commitment to assessment of the highest quality and excellent support for teachers and test takers. They are recognised by universities, employers and official bodies throughout the world.

You can take Cambridge ESOL exams for many reasons like:

  • to measure progress in English

What is British Council's role?
The British Council administers the tests on behalf of the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES) and test papers are corrected at the University.

What are the different types of tests offered?
The tests are offered at five levels. Each examination covers the four main language skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing - and assesses the ability to use a variety of structures and functions in authentic situations. The following levels are being offered to students from Standard VI to X:

KET or the Key English Test is the first or ‘beginner’ level of the Cambridge Main Suite examinations and indicates that the student has developed basic linguistic ‘survival skills’ needed to interact socially or at work in an English speaking environment. KET has three papers - Reading and writing, Listening and Speaking.

PET or the Preliminary English Test is the second level of the Cambridge Main suite examinations and indicates that the student has developed the skills to cope in largely predictable social and work situations in an English-speaking environment. PET has three papers - Reading and writing, Listening and Speaking.

FCE or the First Certificate in English is the third level and indicates that students will be able to work or study fairly comfortably in an English-speaking country. Many employers around the world accept FCE as proof of the holder's ability to work in certain managerial jobs. FCE has five papers - Reading, Writing, Use of English, Listening and Speaking.

Examination fees: Rs 2850
CAE or Certificate of Advanced English is the fourth level of the Cambridge Main Suite examinations. This indicates that the candidate is capable of coping confidently in most situations that would arise in an English speaking country - socially and professionally.
Examination fees: Rs 3250 (For March 6 and June 6 session), Rs 3300 (From 1 October 2006)
Note: In India CAE is offered only in Chennai.
CPE or Certificate of Proficiency in English is the fifth/ highest level examination for the learners of English. At this stage, learners are approaching a standard of English similar to that of an educated native speaker and they can be expected to cope in nearly all situations in English speaking environment.
Examination fees: Rs 4000
Exam date: 14 December 2006
Last date for registration: 10 October 2006
