On February 3, 2009, the English Teaching Professional (ETP) Magazine was launched by Ms. Rina Ray, Secretary, Education, Sports and Culture, Government of NCT of Delhi. Over 100 participants comprising of teachers, master trainers and government officials attended the launch. The event commenced with Mr. Rod Pryde, Regional Director, India and Sri Lanka, highlighting the need for innovative resources that facilitate professional growth of the English teaching community in India. ETP magazine is a step in that direction. Thereafter, on behalf of Macmillan, Ms. Uma Mani, Chief Publisher, ELT and School, invited the participants to contribute articles for the magazine and elaborated the underlying procedure.
While inaugurating the event, Ms. Ray linked teacher development to student progress, which in-turn leads to socio-economic growth of any country. Ms. Ray also expressed faith in the ongoing partnership between Delhi Government and British Council to bring about increased use of English language in primary and secondary classrooms. The event concluded with a Seminar on ‘Exploiting resources in the Classroom’ by Ms. Alison Barrett, Head State Partnerships (Project English), British Council. Through 8 volunteers drawn from the audience, Alison demonstrated the usefulness of the interactive pairing technique, which could be implemented even in a teacher-centric setting.
ETP magazine is the result of three-way partnership between the British Council in India and Sri Lanka, Keyways Publishing in the U.K. and Macmillan Publishers India Limited. Apart from UK-specific write-ups, the magazine will include a unique India and Sri Lanka section. The magazine will have articles for English teachers at all levels, with emphasis on those in upper primary and lower secondary level. The articles will include issues related to practical teaching aspects, professional development of ELT practitioners and pedagogical and teaching resources. In essence, ETP magazine will highlight issues that are directly relevant to teachers in the classroom.
