A theatrical event like no other, this incredible spectacle combines the astonishing skills of 23 actors, dancers, musicians, martial arts experts and street acrobats from a hugely diverse range of locations and backgrounds across India and Sri Lanka. Performed in English, Tamil, Malayalam, Sinhalese, Hindi, Bengali, Marathi and even a little Sanskrit, the result is a passionate, energetic, thrilling and beautiful re-interpretation of the play, which casts aside familiar traditions of performing Shakespeare and replaces them with an epic, visceral and emotional power that has amazed audiences and critics in every city in which it has played.
Directed by Tim Supple and two years in the making, this British Council commissioned show caused a sensation in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai in April last year. It has since had sell-out runs at the Roundhouse in London; Verona, and twice in Stratford upon Avon at the home of the Royal Shakespeare Company. After its triumphant run at London’s Roundhouse, and a sold-out return visit to the RSC’s Swan Theatre, the production, over the course of 2007, has visited Watford, Richmond, Malvern, Newcastle, Bath, Oxford, Edinburgh, Salford and Plymouth.
And now, Indian audiences can experience this breathtaking production prior to a World Tour beginning in Australia and moving to the USA and finally Europe.
