Chancellor Gordon Brown Announces UKIERI Awards

What a great opportunity awaits research collaborators in India and the UK!  Investigating the cultural and geographical transformation of northwest India between 2000 and 300 BC, from the Collapse of Harappan urbanism to the rise the great Early Historic cities? Study Road Traffic Crashes and Injuries in India and UK? Find out mobile Communications to improve monitoring of heart disease and diabetes?

These are just some of the innovative ideas that have been given the go-ahead and have won the UKIERI Awards. On his first visit to India, Chancellor Of The Exchequer RT Honourable Gordon Brown announced the prestigious UK-India Education and Research Awards to the selected Indian institutions in New Delhi.  There are two categories of awards: the major awards which support projects of up to 500,000 Pounds and the UKIERI Standard Awards, growth between £10,000 and “150,000 according to individual financial proposals. A total of over £5 million was awarded to teams from over 70 institutions in the UK and India, in 6 Major and 23 Standard Awards.

The awards bring together the best of Indian and UK institutions and aims to strengthen research and academic ties between renowned centres of learning. These include, for instance Cambridge University and Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology Hyderabad, Imperial College with Indian Institute of Science, Reading University with IIT Madras (Chennai) and Nottingham University with Industrial Toxology Research Centre, Lucknow.

“I see UKIERI and the awards we are celebrating today as a critical part of strengthening further still the ties between Britain and India,” Chancellor Brown spoke underlined how “education ties enrich our societies by deepening our awareness and understanding of other cultures and likewise deepening others; awareness and understanding of our own.”

Successful collaborators for Major Awards are:

University of Cambridge and Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology Hyderabad on Genomics
University of Nottingham and the Industrial Toxicology Research Centre, Lucknow on the Animal Stress-Response Network
University of Leicester and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore on Reliable Smart Adaptable Air Vehicles
Imperial College, London University and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore on Smart Materials for Environment-Friendly Aero-engines
University of Reading and Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune on Regional Climate Change
City University and  Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi on Application Specific Micro-Structured Optical Fibres

A total of over £5 million was awarded to teams from over 70 institutions in the UK and India, in 6 Major and 23 Standard Awards.  The collaborating teams will use their Awards to research areas such as environmentally friendly aeroplanes, climate change and human genetic makeup.

The UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) was launched by Tony Blair in April 2006 and is designed to increase education and research cooperation between the UK and India.
