INSPIRED BY TAGORE

The British Council celebrated 150 years of Rabindranath Tagore’s birth anniversary with a range of collaborations, performances and publications throughout 2011-12.

The Annual Inter School Drama Festival 2011, in association with Central School of Speech and Drama, UK, travelled across the country, involving a wide range of schools. The festival showcased the Theatre in Classrooms Project which involves scriptwriting, acting, costume designing, technical knowledge and pedagogy.

This year the drama festival was an all-India event around the theme ‘Inspired by Tagore’.

Seven schools from across India competed for the finals of the Annual Inter School Drama Festival in December 2011 at the British Council in New Delhi.

Noted actor Konkona Sen Sharma was one of the judges. “Follow a mutlitple of dreams and not just one. That way you will not feel dejected if one of them has not been achieved, “she said before giving away the prizes. Earlier, she told the audience how she began acting with British Council School Plays from 1997.

The school drama festival has been one of British Council’s foremost theatre projects for over 29 years. With this programme, the British Council enabled a strong concept of theatre workshop and performance amongst East India schools. The project allowed students to write/direct/perform their own plays, thereby promoting a sense of teamwork and originality. Several young luminaries in the field of acting from Bollywood or the performing arts have had their first brush with acting from this project which they acknowledge in leading forums.
