About the Judges

Young Screen Entrepreneur Award India finalist is Prathibha.

Pratibha   Prathibha
Business-Managing Director, Editor and Publisher, South Movie Scenes

A vibrant and accomplished media person, who is versatile and has experience in print, web, radio, Television and Films. She has worked on short films and has extensive connections in, and knowledge of the South Indian Film industry. Currently she has collaborated on a 'Book on Indian Cinema' which will be out in November 2008.

Her business idea was the result of the passion she had for the film industry and the uncanny knack of connecting people. The lack of an existing platform and the opportunity to provide the same in this niche space was what she did when creating South Movie Scenes, which now is making its forays into print, digital, and VAS services. Not to mention also creating tremendous opportunities for young persons in the industry, this includes not just actors but technicians, music directors, camera persons and all those involved in film and entertainment.

Madhusudan Agarwal   Madhusudan Agrawal
Founder/Filmmaker, MAM Movies

Madhusudan is an independent filmmaker. Having a fine arts degree from the US, he supports and nurtures independent filmmakers who use media, the arts and technology to inform, inspire and empower others to create positive action in the world. He aims to create innovative events, which will inspire youth to use media for social change.

Kavita Singh Kale   Kavita Singh Kale
Director/Partner, Underground Worm

Her work is guided by intuition and imagination and as a film maker, an artist and an illustrator; she draws inspiration from a constant documentation of her memories in several sketchbooks. She has done post graduation in animation film design from NID and BFA painting from Delhi University. Her work has got screened in many film festivals and also won awards.

Nitin Das   Nitin Das
Director, Filmkaar Productions

A pass out of IIM Lucknow and with a filmmaking course from New York, Nitin is an independent filmmaker based out of Mumbai. He is currently making a feature length children’s film in the slums of Mumbai. The film project combines community development, education and the creative arts in an unusual way to make a positive difference to our society. He worked as a brand manager for India’s largest selling news magazine before he turned to follow his passion of filmmaking. The United Nations environment programme has recently selected one of his films on Global Warming that was made entirely with the people of a small village in the Himalayas

Samira Kanwar   Samira Kanwar
Proprietor, Babble Fish Production

Samira began her career 7 years ago in Ad Film Production with one of India’s leading Production Houses – White Light Moving Picture Company Pvt Ltd. She has since then worked as a Television Director (with Channel [V] as well as and independent Production House), a Producer and a little over a year ago became the proprietor of her own company – Babble Fish Productions. Her company’s work spans television, corporate Av’s , documentaries, music videos, and internet content.

Aliya Curmally   Aliya Curmally
Consultant, National Film Development Corporation of India

With a BA (Growth and Structure of Cities) degree from USA, Aliya has 5 years of hands on experience in producing and distribution. She has worked on films like Black Friday, Marigold, Shoonya, I See You and Meridian Lines and now works for on independent projects and as a consultant to NFDC for their specialty film theatrical distribution program.

Oindrilla Hazra   Oindrilla Hazra
Faculty, Dept. of Cinmatography, Film and TV Institute of India

With a Masters degree in English literature followed by Post graduate diploma in Cinematography, Oindrilla has started her career as a humble Assistant producer for Black Magic Motion Pictures Ltd. She has worked with renowned directors of India like Shyam Banegal and Rituporno Ghosh. Her Company, Peter Pan Production produces shortfilms and documentaries mainly on video format.

THE JUDGES

Martin Smith   Martin Smith
Consultant, Ingenious Media

Martin advises the Chief Executive of Ingenious Media Patrick McKenna (who has just been voted the ninth most influential person in UK media) on government relations and public affairs, and speaks for Ingenious on matters of public policy.

Martin began his career at the National Consumer Council (1979-98) where he was Senior Research Officer, Parliamentary Officer and subsequently Head of Public Affairs. Martin then became Managing Director, and subsequently Chairman, of Government Policy Consultants (GPC) Ltd. From 1997-2003 he was a partner at the Brunswick Group LLP, where he worked on public affairs and corporate PR assignments and started the firm's Russian practice. In 2003 Martin set up West Bridge Consulting Ltd, a specialist advisory consultancy, which he still manages alongside Ingenious commitments. He was chairman of the Young Vic Theatre Company from 1998-2003.

Madhu Mantena   Madhu Mantena
Chief Film Production and Distribution Officer, Saregama.

He comes with wide experience of the Entertainment industry. He created his own music label while still a teenager, which he then sold to the market leader, Supreme Recording Company. Subsequently he was Chief Operation Officer for premier film production company Varma Corporation Ltd., which brought out Company, Road, Bhoot and Sarkar. After working with Adlabs Films Ltd. he started his own media enterprise, Big Bang Media Pvt. Ltd., and began co-producing a film in association with Allu Entertainment Pvt. Ltd., starring Aamir Khan, to be directed by Murugadoss, with Rahman as the Music Director and Ravi K. Chandran as the Director of Photography.

Ravi Gupta   Ravi Gupta
CEO, Mukta Arts Limited and Executive Director, WHISTLING WOODS, a joint venture of Mukta Arts and Film City.

Ravi Gupta, is a postgraduate from IIT Bombay and an MBA from JBI, he brings with him a wealth of media and corporate experience. Ravi Gupta who has moved back recently from London has held Board positions in companies in UK, USA, Middle East etc. He has been the founder CEO of B4U and was earlier Managing Director of NFDC.

Ravi Gupta has been founder member of SRFTII and has been on the governing Board of FTII Pune. His valuable insight in the area of knowledge and skill transfer industry and global contacts helps WHISTLING WOODS achieve the status of an internationally reputed learning institution. It may be recalled that Ravi Gupta has been closely associated with productions of well-known directors including Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Shyam Benegal and Mira Nair. Ravi Gupta has represented India on the Board of Paris based FIAPF and has been on the Board of Los Angeles based IATAS that awards the iEMMY. He has also been the founding Managing editor of CINEMA in INDIA.

Simon Gammell   Simon Gammell
Director, British Council – West India

Simon was educated at the Universities of Cambridge and London. His first career was as a theatre director in Scotland, England and Italy; he also worked as a freelance journalist, teacher and film-maker. In 1985, he joined the British Council, and worked for several years in Italy and Argentina.

Between 1994 and 1999 he worked in London, first as Director of the British Council’s Performing Arts department, and latterly as Director of the whole Arts Group.  During that time he took a leading role in producing several theatre tours to India by companies such as Shared Experience, Out of Joint, The Right Size, The Kosh and the Royal Shakespeare Company (with Comedy of Errors, directed by Tim Supple – who recently directed Midsummer Night’s Dream in India). It was these projects that gave him his first experiences of India, and seeded the idea of seeking an opportunity to work here.

He arrived to take up his new job in Mumbai in February 2006 from Sydney, where he had spent the previous six years working as Director of the British Council in Australia. He lists as his main interests the arts, history, literature, travel, sports and people.

Who can apply:

Entrepreneurs between 25 and 35 years working in any of the following screen* sectors:

  • Development, production, post-production
  • Distribution and/or sales
  • Exhibition – cinema/venue and/or festival/event programming and management
  • Journalism (print and broadcast) and publishing
  • Marketing, internet websites/ web networks, public and media relations
  • Promotion, education and retail
  • Artist management
  • Consultants providing specialist services in any of the areas outlined

*In the term ‘Screen’ we include feature film, documentary, shorts, television production and animation.

We recognise that a finalist may be active as a filmmaker however his/her work as an artist should be secondary to their focus as an entrepreneur in the promotion of the film industry in their country. Artistic talent will not be factored into the judging procedure – finalists will be judged solely on the merit of their entrepreneurial abilities in the industry.

The Award process

India Finalist

  • A selection committee creates a shortlist of contenders from the applications received.
  • An established UK screen entrepreneur conducts an interactive session with the shortlisted contenders.
  • A panel of high profile judges selects a finalist to travel to the UK to represent India and compete for the international award through an interview process.
  • The India finalist gets an opportunity to travel to London, Cardiff and Bristol in October to meet leaders and innovators in the UK film and TV business.
  • The programme will be tailored to the finalists’ interests, and include both a group itinerary for the finalists to get a shared overview of the best of the UK film scene and specific meetings to introduce finalists to UK contacts of particular interest to them for commercial or collaborative purposes. The tour will comprise visits, meetings, seminars, screenings and events. We anticipate it will also include a masterclass with an internationally renowned UK screen entrepreneur during which the finalists will be able to question them about the development of their career in the field.

International Young Screen Entrepreneur (IYSE)

  • Participate in the IYSE award ceremony and film showcase. Each international finalist will be given the opportunity to promote a short example of film from their country to an invited audience, who will then vote for their favourite clip. The award ceremony will follow, where the international winner will be announced.
  • In addition, work selected for the showcase will also be featured on the Creative Economy webpage for visitors to vote for their favourite.
  • The jury will select the overall international winner of the award (International Young Creative Entrepreneur of the Year).
  • The winner will receive a YCE bowl designed by acclaimed glass designers Gillies Jones Glass
  • In addition to the award title, the winner receives a financial prize (£7,500) to be spent on a collaborative project with the British Council that builds the relationship between the winning country and the UK.
  • Attend the Times BFI 52nd London Film Festival as industry delegates and take part in a variety of tailored events for screen professionals.

The Times BFI 52nd London Film Festival (13 - 30 October 2008)

London Film Festival is the most highly regarded and anticipated film event in Europe’s cultural calendar, which attracts leading international filmmakers, industry professionals and the media together with large public audiences to London for a two week showcase of the best contemporary cinema from around the world. The Festival is one of Europe’s largest non-competitive festivals. Alongside a public screening programme which presents 180 feature films and 130 short films each year, the Festival hosts panel discussions, masterclasses, screen talks and live events, as well as a comprehensive education programme and a slate of industry events and Specifically this will include attendance at screenings.

The IYSEY national finalists will:

  • Participate in The Times BFI London Film Festival to:
  • Receive delegate accreditation which will allow them to attend certain LFF events, screenings, talks, seminars etc.
  • Take part in a specially tailored programme put together by LFF as part of the Festival’s Industry programme / Skills Development Week. Participate in the IYSEY Award Ceremony and reception, where the inaugural winner will be announced

Each finalist will also be given the opportunity to promote a short film or short example of film from their own country to an invited audience at a private IYSEY Film Screening Event to celebrate the diverse film cultures inherent in the ten participating countries, and showcase films from emerging markets to the invited UK film industry guests.

Film sector definition

For the purpose of this award participants can be drawn from any of the following areas of the industry:

  • Film development, production, post-production
  • Film distribution and/or sales
  • Film exhibition –  cinema/venue and/or festival/event programming and management
  • Film journalism (print and broadcast) and publishing
  • Film marketing, internet websites/web networks, public and media relations
  • Film promotion, education and retail
  • Artist management

In the term ‘film’ we include feature film, documentary, television production, animation, and interactive media.

Eligibility

A participant must:

  • Be aged between 25 and 35
  • Already working in the film sector (as defined above)
  • Be entrepreneurial and have shown their ability in the promotion of film in their country, particularly in a commercial context
  • Through their character, drive and abilities demonstrate their potential to be a future leader of the film industry in their country
  • Applicants should not primarily be academics.
