Announcing the YDE award 2008
UK has a strong reputation for creative excellence in design and is a top exporter of design world-wide.
YDE is an exciting opportunity to engage with young entrepreneurs, nurture them to become the next generation of leaders in the Indian design industry, support them in their promotion of the best in national creativity, and linking them with the UK at this key stage in their development.
In 2008 the following 10 countries are participating in the IYDE awards: Egypt, India, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mexico, Poland, Slovenia, South Africa, Taiwan and Turkey.
Who can apply:
Entrepreneurs between 25 and 35 years working in any of the following design sectors:
- Architecture and environment
- Interiors & experience design
- Product design manufacture: furniture, industrial products and crafts
- Design promotion: exhibitions, events, festivals and retail
We recognise that a participant may be active as a designer; however their work as an artist should be secondary to their focus as an entrepreneur in the promotion of design. Artistic talent will not be factored into the judging procedure – finalists will be judged solely on the merit of their entrepreneurial abilities in the industry.

- A selection committee will shortlist the applications received, and conduct workshop followed by an interview.
- The selection committee will nominate an India finalist to travel to the UK to represent India and compete for the international award.
- The India finalist will get an opportunity to travel to the UK (London and Glasgow) in September 2008 on a visit programme tailored to one’s business needs which includes group and individual meetings to introduce them to fellow entrepreneurs and exemplary initiatives, to give them an overview of the design sector in the UK.
- During the UK tour all the national finalists’ will take part in a judging procedure where they will make a presentation to an experienced UK industry jury about their work and their understanding of, and vision for their creative sector.
- The jury will select the overall international winner of the award (International Young Creative Entrepreneur of the Year). The winner will receive a YCE bowl designed by acclaimed glass designers Gillies Jones Glass.
- In addition to the award title, the winner receives a financial prize of £7,500 to be spent on a collaborative project with the British Council that builds the relationship between the winning country and the UK.
- Finalists attend the International Young Design Entrepreneur Alumni Seminar to network and discuss key issues in the international design business.
- Showcase their work in 100% Design and attend London Design Festival.
100% Design (18 – 21 September)
100% Design is one of the world's most important contemporary interior design exhibitions presenting the latest in furniture, lighting, and accessories. The fair is the UK's premier contemporary interiors event for the contract market. There is no other show that connects the worlds of architecture and design with innovative, contemporary interior products, creativity and an exciting mix of new and established talent. With Tom Dixon as the newly appointed creative director, 100% Design 2007 was a huge success with over 26,000 trade visitors attending the show.
London Design Festival (13 - 23 September)
The London Design Festival is now in its fifth year and has become a fixture on the international creative calendar. With over 200 projects and audiences of 300,000 it has quickly become one of the most important design events in the world. The Festival is an umbrella brand and works in partnership with a wide network of organisations and individuals. They range from museums and retailers, to educational institutes, creative businesses, trade shows, magazines, designers and international cities.
We are delighted to announce that Gunjan Gupta, Director of a furniture design company Wrap Art & Design from Delhi has won the exclusive title of 'Indian Young Design Entrepreneur of the Year 2007' which then throws wide open, the doors to the UK to compete for the International Title – International Young Design Entrepreneur of the Year Award. After a day long interview at a charming heritage space in Bangalore, the panel of judges unanimously voted Gunjan Gupta to represent India at the IYDEY Programme in the UK.
The judges said of Gunjan in their final comments - “Gunjan has identified a future for Indian craft in the contemporary context, clearly articulated and executed to high quality. The products are themselves incredibly evocative and beautifully produced. She can clearly demonstrate success in drawing skill and respect back into artisanship, as well as a willingness to take considerable risk"

Alice Cicolini Alice is British Council India’s Head of Arts and leads on the Knowledge Economy programme currently in development. Previously Alice was a design curator with British Council Art, Architecture & Design, with a specific focus on fashion. She trained in fashion theory, buying and art direction from the prestigious London College of Fashion and Central St Martins. She completed her Masters in Fashion History & Theory and wrote her dissertation on the fashion for 'vintage' from 1970 to 2001. She published The New English Dandy with Thames & Hudson in 2005, and is currently working on her PhD on 1920s salon culture in the UK. She has worked for various designers, most importantly Tom Dixon (previously Creative Director of Habitat UK), and curated various exhibitions - 21st Century Dandy, Inside Out-Underwear & Style in the UK, UK Styling, Sensurround Manchester (DJ/VJ project), as well as numerous seminars & fashion shows. In India she has curated Global Local, an exhibition of contemporary Indian design, which opened on 16th April at the Palm Court, India Habitat Centre, New Delhi and completed its tour at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. She also commissioned and produced the internationally acclaimed A Midsummer Nights Dream, directed by Tim Supple, as well as conceived and initiated Creative Futures, a creative entrepreneurship programme for young Indian entrepreneurs. Alice originally trained in feature writing and has completed her BA in film and drama from University of Reading UK.
Pramiti Madhavji Pramiti started her career in advertising with Everest Advertising in Mumbai, and after 6 years in the field of client servicing left to explore her passion for graphic design. She acquired a Higher National Diploma in Graphics in London, returning soon after to start her own design studio ‘The Blue Pencil Design Studio’. After a few years of running her own business and consulting with leading advertising agencies, she then took up the opportunity of moving into publication design. Pramiti found her niche when she joined Ogaan Publications in 1998, and grew in her role to take charge as Art Director as well as Decor Editor for ELLE magazine. Perfectly combining her art direction skills with her second passion “home décor”, she took over as the founding editor of the Indian edition of ELLE Décor in the winter of 2000. ELLE DECOR India is today a bi-monthly magazine with a circulation of over 37,000 copies and is part of an international network with editions in 20 countries. In addition to the magazine, ELLE DECOR India also has two key events yearly – the EDIDA (The ELLE DECOR International Design Awards) and the Art and Design Show.
Ramesh Manickam Ramesh Manickam , an Industrial Designer by passion and an entrepreneur is the CEO and Design director of Centroid Creative Hubb, an Automotive and Product Design firm based in Chennai, South India. Ramesh is an Alumini of IIT Delhi and served the automotive Industry in the area of styling for 8 years before starting Centroid. During his working at Enfield, the legendary Cruiser - Thunderbird, which revolutionised the Indian Motorbiking scenario with its striking looks was designed and crafted by Ramesh till the last detail. He had worked from the concept, right through the implementation of the design. After starting Centroid, he is leading a team of 15 designers, and had worked on various projects from Tractors to Pens, providing services from Product Research, trend forcasting, Concept Design / Styling, Engineering and mockups and prototypes. At Centroid, he takes care of complete firm from business development, design and engineering. Ramesh is planning to come up with a specific range of high end innovative product line, in the area of home interiors under the brand "Centroid Creations" shortly.
Tania Singh Khosla Tania Singh Khosla received her MFA from Yale University, USA and returned to found tsk Design, a leading Graphic Design firm in Bangalore in 1997. At Yale, her thesis Here, There and Graphic Design assessed the possibility of a hybrid design aesthetic rooted in an “Indian” sensibility and structured by a modern Swiss design style. In practice, Khosla continues to negotiate the balance between historical and cultural context, internationalist aesthetics and a contemporary Indian design language. tsk Design has provided design solutions for a range of Indian and multinational clients including Biocon, Himatsingka Seide, SAP Labs, ING Vysya amongst others. Their experimental and hybrid design sensibility is especially reflected in their work for MTV and hospitality projects for The Park Hotels, Khyber in Mumbai and Touch in Hyderabad. Khosla has been invited by the British Council to the World Creative Forum, London, and presented the firm’s work at ICA, Institute of Contemporary Arts, London and Conqueror Awards and Design Seminar, Malaysia. The firm’s work has been featured in numerous publications such as How(USA), Eye(UK), IDI(India), and Indian Design(Netherlands). Their work was showcased at Global-Local, a British Council exhibition at the V&A in 2005. Recently, they were picked by Wallpaper* for GlobalEdit, Salone Del Mobile, Milan 2006 as one of the top 100 emerging design firms from around the world.
Soumitro Ghosh
Soumitro Ghosh is an architect practicing from Bangalore, India over the last 10 years whose body of work is widely followed and acknowledged abroad and in India through various awards and publications. The oeuvre is an intense collaboration with Nisha Mathew Ghosh from the inception of their practice. A practice that looks at architectural design conceptually and at the craft of making of diverse projects from urban parks, institutional, hospitality, corporate, residential, interior, furniture, product and brand building design work. A graduate of the School of Architecture CEPT, Ahmedabad he has taught and lectured widely. Recipient of the following commendations / awards amongst others:

- Architecture + Cityscape Awards, Singapore 2007
- Architecture + Cityscape Awards, Dubai, UAE 2005
- Highly commended by MIPIM Architectural Review Future Projects Award 2005, London & Cannes 2004

- Nominated for the Borromini International Architecture Award for Young Architects, Rome, ITALY 2001.

The International Young Design Entrepreneur of the Year (IYDEY) Award showcases successful and promising design entrepreneurs from select countries across the world and presents them with the opportunity to network with each other, familiarise themselves with the UK design sector, showcase their work at 100% Design and win the IYDEY Award.
The award, in its third year, seeks to identify and nurture the next generation of leaders in the Indian design sector* by linking them with the UK at a key stage in their development.
The India Finalist will be selected from amongst short-listed candidates who will be interviewed by a panel of design experts.The India Finalist gets the opportunity to visit the UK to participate in the International Young Design Entrepreneur (IYDEY) Award Programme.
The UK Tour, scheduled for September 2007, aims to provide a general overview of the UK design sector and an opportunity to network with finalists from other countries. The week-long tour will include interactions with some of UK’s most acclaimed designers, design-lead retailers and manufacturers, publishers, and educational and cultural institutions active in the procurement of design and architecture. Specific meetings will also be organised for each of the finalists taking into consideration their particular design interests.
The tour will include events of the London Design week http://www.londondesignfestival.com/ programme – openings, seminars, and events – concluding at 100% Design, the UK’s largest and most respected commercial interior design fair. Selected finalists will have the opportunity to display their work at the British Council stand and finally pitch for the IYDEY Award by making a presentation to a high profile jury consisting of the UK’s leading design experts.

The winner of the IYDEY prize receives a financial award of 7,500₤ to be spent on a design project in collaboration with the British Council and representation at the British Council stand at 100% Design 2008.
Candidates must already be active professionally in the Indian design sector Design sector includes the following:
- Architecture, interiors and environment
- Graphic design: communication, publishing, branding and multimedia
- Product design manufacture: furniture, industrial products and craft
- Interactive and digital media
- Design promotion: exhibitions, events, festivals and retail
We recognise that a participant may strongly influence the business of design without being a practising designer.
A participant must:
- Be aged between 25 and 35 (as on September 15, 2007)
- Heading an independent design venture for at least two years
- Demonstrate the ability to promote design in India, in either a commercial context, public context, or both
- Demonstrate their potential to be a future leader in the Design sector in India
- Have English language skills to IELTS 6 - ‘competent user’ or above
