How to work using instancing for various purposes

What is an instance?
An instance is another occurrence or version of an object. For example one page may have two language instances:

       English instance:
    http://www.britishcouncil.org/japan-education.htm

       Japanese instance:
    http://www.britishcouncil.org/jp/japan-education.htm

Notice that the end portion of the URL is identical japan-education.htm. This is because the page is one object (not two) but has two different language instances.

When do I need to use instances?
If you require a dual, tri etc. lingual version of an object
If you want to edit a page that is live without the live content being affected
If you want to be able to roll pages and other objects back to previous versions / keep an audit trail of your pages/objects
