The aims of the course were to examine and explore the issues involved in encouraging Roma families to support their children’s learning, with specific focus on:

The establishment of programmes that support Roma families in accessing education from early years onwards
The development of close links between schools and the Roma community
The provision of appropriate curriculum and learning materials that reflect and respect Roma culture and language
Overcoming the barriers to secondary education through multi-agency approaches
Securing of education for existing cohorts of secondary non-attenders
The recruitment and training of Roma to work in education
The empowerment of Roma communities to ensure their participation in decision making in the educational sphere
The empowerment of Roma communities to ensure their participation in decision making in the educational sphere
The opportunity to visit Appleby New Fair, the largest Gypsy and Traveller gathering in England
