WHAT WE DO

The work of the UK Governance Team

The aim of our work in governance is to enhance awareness of the UK’s democratic values and processes by working in partnership with other countries to strengthen good government and human rights.

We work with both government and civil society to advance debate, knowledge and skills and seek to create a wider appreciation of the UK as a valued partner in tackling key reform agendas and promoting sustainable development.

Law and Human Rights

We seek to assist in the design, development and evaluation of human rights based initiatives that promote and protect universally agreed standards.

We provide advice and support on human rights programmes to our overseas network.  We research and maintain up todate information on new developments in policy making, professional and academic research, and educational and professional training.  We assist with projects at national and local level and maintain a network of leading contacts and partners.

Gender Equality

Our gender equality work involves working with British Council offices overseas to share the UK’s experiences and initiatives that have been developed to address the inequalities that women face such as violence against women (including trafficking) and women’s participation in politics.

There is a continued need to address the issue of access to education for girls and we will be looking into working in areas of gender and HIV/AIDS, which is becoming of increasing concern in the global environment.

Economics and management

In the world of the post-cold war Washington consensus, economic liberalisation is a global phenomenon.  A sound economy is the foundation on which a modern democratic society is built.  The UK has experience to share from privatisation to corporate social responsibility, in the public sector and in the private sector.

Ethnicy, communities and social inclusion

Ethnicity is a vital element of an individuals identity.  Within a society, sometimes as a result of a process of migration, ethnicity has implications for social inclusion and access to rights at both the national and international level.

Our work in this area will focus on major UK development and networks at both policy and civil society levels. The aim is to build the British Council information resource so that it can support the activities of its global governance network

Governance and information

Access to information is a vital component of a democratic society and our work focuses on information rights and equity.  We raise awareness and share experience of access to information initiatives that benefit marginalised groups in society.

Our work also involves establishing contacts within the UK and developing project opportunities with the British Council network to share good practice.

Modernising government

The focus of our work in this area is on changing relationship between government and citizens.  Principal areas include: improving access to public service; electronic-government; national, devolved, regional and local democracy; citizenship and human rights education; and arts/governance issues.

Participative democracy

By our work with international partners in equality, inclusion and diversity, we seek to promote a better understanding of participative democracy and the development of democratic government.  We work specifically in the areas of electoral reform, democratic audit, media, e-governance, arts and social development.
