Benefits for Trainee Teachers

'The assistantship has had a huge impact on my language skills. I left England speaking only English and very bad French. I now have good conversational Norwegian, a confidence in my ability to learn other languages and a will to do so. I can now tutor maths and physics reasonably confidently in Norwegian.'
Matthew Tupling on his placement in Norway

Is teaching for you?
If you spend time as a Comenius Assistant you'll certainly discover if teaching is the right career for you. You’ll be immersed in the day-to-day life of the country you choose and the school you’re placed with. You'll develop your skills across different subject areas, picking up innovative ideas from more experienced teachers. Additionally, you’ll help your school develop their international links, making learning more real and exciting for the children.

Stand out in the job market
Your experience as a Comenius assistant will put you head and shoulders above candidates who apply for jobs straight from a degree. Employers will know you’ve got hands-on teaching experience in a real, demanding and unusual environment. They’ll be aware you are flexible and can cope with challenges. Understanding a different education system will make you an asset to any school keen on expanding their international focus and cross-curricular learning from a European or global perspective. Employers will know you are mature, are quick to learn and have good communication and problem-solving skills.
