"The British Council 9/11 Scholarship Program is an exciting and extremely worthwhile opportunity. I found out about the opportunity through my immediate family and through letters that I received. I had always been interested in living or studying abroad and I was already aware of the outstanding British universities.
In my case, the university I attended is one of the best in the country, let alone the world, so I used this opportunity to receive an excellent and challenging education. As I had researched graduate programs across the globe and in the US, this university seemed to have a well-established reputation with many notable and prestigious alumni.
In terms of preparing to come abroad, I knew that I needed to figure out my accommodation, store my current belongings from my apartment and obtain a visa. I knew that I could obtain most extraneous personal effects like bedding and linens after I arrived. While I learned of my acceptance only weeks before I was scheduled to begin classes, I was able to coordinate with the British Council and my university to obtain housing and my visa.
With the diversity of cultures in London, it was noticeable that many people tend to make friends with others from their country, but I found that the best experience was meeting different people from various countries to truly develop a cultural scope. Through orientation programs I met a few people and at times it was difficult to meet people out and about, but as you acclimate to the country and interact regularly with more people, especially through classes and such, it’s not too difficult to make close friends.
Life in London is very similar to many of the big cities in the US. There is accessible transport, nightlife, cultural events, festivals, tourist attractions, shopping and more. Outside of the city, there are many beautiful places to visit and the English countryside is picturesque and peaceful. Moreover, the UK has easy access to other European destinations through low cost travel opportunities, so there is always lots to do.
When applying for a scholarship, be passionate and confident. Know that this scholarship with create many new opportunities for you and that it is an incredible experience and in many ways a gift. Remember not to take it for granted if you receive it and expect to do great things!"
