INTERCULTURAL NAVIGATORS ATTACHMENT SCHEME

The British Council is inviting organisations in the UK and countries in Northern, Central and Eastern Europe to partners us in organising international attachments for young leaders working in differerent areas (ngo, arts, education, business etc.) who particpated in our Intercultural Navigators training program. Navigators would be taking up short work placements in an organisation or institution in a different country. This will permit them to put what they have learned during the training programme into practice in a real work environment.

What we expect from the hosting organisation

to host short-term internships (2 weeks) for two Intercultural Navigators in the area of intercultural dialogue,
in co-operation with the participant and British Council agree on a two-week programme which will mutually beneficial,
to provide an insight into multicultural and diversity issues and the ways of tackling them within the organisation,
to provide a space in which the intern can utilise their required skills and built on already-existing knowledge.

Why this is beneficial for the organisation

As societies in Europe experience ever greater diversity through immigration and changing patterns of social mobility, employers in all  sectors - public, private and voluntary  - find themselves increasingly having to adapt their policies and practices to engage with this diversity and maximise its benefits and opportunities. The Intercultural Navigators attachment scheme offers hosting organisations the opportunity to:

gain a new perspective on their own activities and the issues they deal with,
increase their capacity to respond to the needs of more complex and diverse societies,
learn about good practice in other countries,
build connections with counterparts in Europe to share knowledge, plan collaborations for greater impact, and create long-lasting networks for dealing with critical policy issues of mutual concern.

How to get involved

The attachments will take place during January to March 2010 (but could be before this if there were suitable opportunities).  The range of organisations which would be suitable for the scheme is very wide including government departments, local authorities, voluntary organisations, the arts, media, law, police, youth work, community relations organisations, etc.

Please note that hosts are not required to make a financial contribution as navigators participating in the scheme will receive a grant from the British Council to help with their travel and accommodation costs (with any further costs being covered from their own resources). The main requirement for hosts will be to provide a short but meaningful work programme that will provide an opportunity for participants to put into practice their intercultural skills.
