About This Course

This course is for secondary school students who are currently studying in forms 3 and 4. The aims of this course are to help your child to activate and extend their knowledge of English grammar and develop their written communication skills.

Course Objectives

Throughout the course, your child will work towards achieving a number of learning outcomes. These relate to the way the language is used in real life situations and are designed to help them develop their language skills in practical ways.

By the end of the course, your child will be able to:

Writing

  • write a variety of text types including letters, reports, descriptions, reviews, articles, narratives and discursive essays
  • identify different text-types
  • produce well-punctuated texts at word, sentence and paragraph level
  • plan, draft and revise texts according to their purposef
  • plan and organize information and ideas using appropriate cohesive (linking) devices
  • identify and produce texts with the appropriate level of formality or informality

Grammar

  • use appropriate grammar in context in order to achieve the appropriate communicative function
  • use direct and reported speech effectively in articles and narratives
  • use narrative tenses effectively to tell a story
  • use the passive voice effectively in appropriate text-types, for example reports, reviews and articles
  • produce extended sentences through the effective use of relative clauses

Course Content

The course book is Successful Writing Intermediate In order to achieve the learning outcomes, whilst focussing on the most relevant material from the book, the teacher will also supplement it with other sources, tapes and videos to make lessons as interesting and stimulating as possible.

Demonstrating Progress

Your child's progress is measured by continuous assessment. During the course the class teacher will set writing and reading tasks in class.

Provided that your child has attended at least 75% of their classes, they will receive a report on their progress; and the areas they need to improve, and a certificate at the end of Semester B.
