Course Topics
The input sessions will fall into the following five areas:

language analysis and awareness
the young learner, the teacher and the teaching/learning context
planning for effective teaching of young learners
classroom management and teaching skills for working with young learners
resources and materials for teaching English to young learners.

How long does the course last?
The course runs over a 10 week period. There are four intensive days at the beginning of the course running from 9.30am to 5.30pm. After these intensive days input sessions are on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 1pm. There will also be two/three periods of teaching practice in the afternoon every week lasting three hours each. The course demands a further commitment of several hours a week for preparation and assignments. There will also be a minimum of eight hours observation of experienced teachers as part of the course.

How many candidates are accepted on each course?

Ten candidates is the maximum number of candidates for each course.

Do I get a grade and certificate if I pass?
There is no final examination. Certificates are awarded at Pass A, Pass B and Pass levels on the basis of continuous assessment of your teaching practice, assignments and course participation, by our own tutors and by an external moderator appointed by the University of Cambridge English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).

How much does the course cost?
The course fee is $25,000. No fee is required on application. Fees are only payable once a place is offered after interview.

How much teaching will I have to do?
Teaching practice starts in week two and continues until the end of the course. Each teaching practice group consists of five trainees and one tutor. Each group teaches a class of volunteer students - one for the Primary phase of teaching and one for the Secondary phase. The lessons take place in the afternoons (up to four afternoons per week) in two schools on Hong Kong Island. Trainees take turns to teach for 30 to 60 minutes while the rest of the group observes. Each practice session is followed by one hour of group feedback with that tutor. Each trainee will do a total of six hours teaching, covering a range of levels and techniques.

Where will the teaching practice (TP) take place?
The TP will take place off-site at local primary and secondary schools, i.e. not at the British Council in Supreme Court Road.

How much observation will I have to do?
There will be a minimum of eight hours observation of experienced teachers as part of the course.

Are there any written assignments?
There are four written assignments in total. During the course, preparation, homework, written assignments and background reading will occupy much of your time.
