Who is this course for?
This 12-hour course has been designed for students of higher intermediate level (GE6 / EE6) and above who are keen to develop their ability to produce academic essays in English.
About This Course
You will develop the skills to produce academic essays and other pieces of writing at the standard needed for university-level education.
Course Content
- Lesson 1 – The writing process and how to write in a formal style
- Lesson 2 – a) Planning and structuring an essay; b) Paragraphing
- Lesson 3 – a) Introductions and conclusions; b) Persuasive essays
- Lesson 4 – a) Describing a process; b) Cohesion
- Lesson 5 – Describing data and trends
- Lesson 6 – a) Editing; b) Course review
Course Objectives
By the end of the course, learners will be better able to:
- Brainstorm, organise ideas and effectively plan an academic essay
- Understand the writing process from initial planning to editing
- Understand the concept of critical thinking
- Write an effective and concise introduction
- Compose paragraphs, with topic and supporting sentences
- Write an effective conclusion
- Use connectives and linking phrases effectively
- Plan and write persuasive and discursive essays
- Describe data, trends and processes
- Write in an appropriate formal style
Special Note
A placement test is required before registration if this is the first time you have been registered on a British Council course. This course is suitable for those students who are placed at higher intermediate level (GE6 or EE6) and above. Placement test results are valid for six months only.
