Hong Kong Morning News

Teacher's comment:

This piece of writing won the annual World Book Day competition for P3, P4 and UP1 students. The lesson involved reading a spoof news article in which animals escape from Ocean Park and are found in strange places all over Hong Kong. There were numerous reading activities around this before children were asked to plan their own news story, along a similar theme.

The entries were assessed not on the accuracy of the language, but on the inventiveness of the story itself. This student showed that she has a great imagination, as well as a sound grasp of narrative structure. It is an entertaining and funny read. She received a well-deserved book voucher.

The Work:

Yesterday, at 10:30am, hundreds of animals and birds escaped from Hong Kong Ocean Park. It was because the guards did not give them enough food. So they ran out of Ocean Park and found something to eat. They stole people’s money and bought food for themselves. In the afternoon, a guard said that if we used some food, the animals would walk towards the smell and back to Ocean Park. At that night, they put some food in their cages. This plan really worked. A few minutes later, the animals all went back to their cages. All the guards shouted ‘HOORAY!’ for the guard who thought of the idea. The chief guard said to his men to give the animals more food.
