This course is designed for candidates taking the DSE in 2012 and who need more work on the fundamentals of tackling basic texts and tasks confidently in English.
This course helps develop students’ familiarity with ways of describing and discussing current issues by exposing them to a wide range of text-types and topics. By completing supported tasks and receiving guided practice, students will develop confidence across the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students will study and analyse a selected graded reader during the course and this will help students to respond appropriately to longer texts with more understanding and confidence.
We offer the course at Pre-intermediate level. It includes:
- exposure to everyday texts as well as a graded reader to build confidence in reading longer texts
- reviewing, revising and building upon basic language patterns and vocabulary
- regular guided speaking tasks for different purposes and different audiences
- guided, staged speaking and writing practice with feedback.
The course will help students in various ways:
- by working with current topics, students will be exposed to a range of vocabulary and language patterns to express ideas and views
- by participating in regular tasks, students will gain confidence across the skills
- by receiving regular feedback and language input, students will extend their ability to use a variety of vocabulary and language patterns.
We regularly evaluate students’ progress through continuous assessment. Each seventeen-week semester features two assessed activities and after each assessment your child will reflect on how they performed. At the end of each semester, the teacher will discuss your child’s work with them one to one and will comment on their self assessment record that is kept in their folder for you to see.
A report is sent home on your child's progress at the end of each semester if they have attended 75% of classes. Our observations on learning progress and strengths during assessments help inform our comments as well as the grades we award for reading, writing, listening, speaking and effort/participation.
We understand that you want to be involved in and support your child’s learning. To this end we have created an outline of the roles and responsibilities of all those involved in the learning process.
We are committed to providing an inclusive learning environment in which children are supported to achieve their potential in a spirit of inclusion and acceptance. We value the abilities and achievements of all our pupils and recognise that parents hold key information and knowledge of their child.
If your child has a specific educational (or medical) need, please share this knowledge before registration.
A placement test will be required for new students before registration in order to determine their English level. A course counsellor will then help select the course most suited to their English level. Test results are valid for six months.
