Unit 1 Who are you?

Page 4 - conversations

The first two exercises, Meeting people and Small Talk, practises language you may use when first meeting somebody. Meeting people is a vocabulary exercise focusing on questions and Small talk is a listening activity - can you match the questions and answers?

Page 5 - Grammar Link

The grammar on page 5 looks at the verb to be. There are three language exercises which offer further practice on the verb to be; Conference introductions, School open day and Who are you?

Page 6: Numbers

Hearing numbers correctly is a critical skill in English. What time do you arrive? and Letters and numbers provide you with extra practice.

Have a go at Numbers and prices for further practice.

Page 6 & 7: The football business

Some of the exercises in The football business practice pronouns. For further practice have a look at Subject pronouns, Is this your bag? and First day in the office.

Have a go at Making a phone call. This listening activity is about someone having problems using the phone. There are three different listenings in all.

Pages 10 - 12: Blah, blah, blah

The rest of the exercises in Macmillan English Campus practice the present simple which is the main focus of the coursebook.

The four Grammar Reference Units at the bottom of the unit will provide you with a good overview of this area of grammar: Present simple: affirmative is the positive form; I like swimming, Present simple: negative e.g. I don't like swimming, Present simple: interrogative is the question form; Do you like swimming? and Present simple: spelling checks your third person spelling; flys or flies?

There are also three Language Exercises to practice these grammar rules; two called Present simple and one called The taxi driver.

Finally, you have a listening activity, Good for the environment, which helps you practise the negative form of the present simple.

Unit 3 Daily Routines

This unit starts off with two listenings about daily routine: My job and Daily Routine. My job is a two part listening so make sure you do both exercises.

This section of the book also looks at common word partnerships - verbs and nouns that go together, or collocations. School mornings and What do you do in your job? practice some verb and noun collocations.

Exercise 4 on page 15 looks at present simple questions. Have a go at What does Mrs Bari do? and Question formation for more practice.

Page 16: Adverbs of frequency

Do the two Grammar Reference Units first; Adverbs of frequency; never to always and Adverbs of frequency: word order first. Then have ago at Market research for further practice.

When talking about routines and time it is often difficult to remember which preposition to use. Try the two Language Exercises: Working in Bristol and Mr Gonzales starts work at 9 am. to help you remember your prepositions.

Finish off with a fun game: Pret a porter - each time you match the correct preposition the supermodel gets to eat a bit of cake!!

Page 17 &18 – arranging a trip

The first two exercises, You’ve got mail and You have ten messages, practise language you use when dealing with email. You’ve got mail is a vocabulary exercise where you drop words into the correct place in an email and You have ten messages is a listening activity – find the correct expression on the list.

How many, how often?

This unit deals with ways asking how many? and how often? Modern communication will give you further practice in this area.

Customer Enquiries

Dealing with customer enquiries is one of the most important skills we need in business. Company and customer, and Interview with a TV director have listening and language activities which will help you in this vital area.

In business it’s so important to know what to do when you’re in a restaurant – whether you’re entertaining a client, or out with your colleagues. Eating Out will prepare you with the vocabulary you need when you go out for a meal.

There are lots of great activities linked to this unit. Conference Facilities is a listening activity using the vocabulary you need to describe a range of business facilities, while Have we got everything? and Come to the zoo  present  ways of using the important structure have got.

Have got and  have are crucial expressions in English, and there are three exercises which show you how to use them accurately:

Have got: present simple affirmative;

Have got: present simple negative;

Have got: present simple interrogative.

Do the three Grammar Reference Units first: There is/there are: affirmative; There is/ there are negative; There is/ there are interrogative, so that you are clear on how to use this essential structure. Then you will be ready for the other exercises in this unit.

This year’s conference practises the affirmative, negative and interrogative forms of there is and there are. You select the correct answers to complete a conversation about a conference venue. Beach life contrasts there is and there are with the pronouns it and they. You key in the correct word to complete a text about a view from a hotel.

Page 28: A Job interview

Job interviews are one of the most important things you will ever have to use English for. Interview questions practises the questions you answer when you apply for a job with an English-speaking employer. Can you do this? gives you further practice with questions about ability, and Robot rescue dog is a fun listening activity about what a mechanical dog can and can’t do.

Nowadays the computer is essential in business. Computer classes will build the vocabulary you need when dealing with them.  There are many ways of using can/can’t. Permission: can and may will help you to use these verbs as fully as possible. Signs is a fun way to practise what you have learnt.

This Unit introduces the past Simple, and you can sharpen your accuracy with five exercises: Questions in the past simple, which is a language exercise, and Past simple regular: affirmative; Past simple regular: negative; and Past simple regular: interrogative which show you how to build sentences. Past simple regular: spelling practises the rules of spelling regular verbs in the past simple. When you have completed these activities you will be ready to try the other exercises in this unit.

Page 33-35: A dangerous criminal

Tell me about your weekend is a listening activity in which you listen to questions and type in the correct short answer for each of them.
Page 36-37: Company history
What does your company do? Is a vocabulary activity which will develop your ability to tell people about the organisation you work for. You can finish this unit with another website research project - The New York Stock Exchange - which will give you valuable practice in reading and understanding a real-life website.

Page 43-44 Things go wrong

Checking in at a hotel can be a stressful and difficult process. Checking in at the Riverside Hotel and Hotel check-in are two listening activities that will help you with this. At the Royal Hotel is a language exercise which demonstrates correct ways to make and answer polite requests. When in Rome…  provides you with more vocabulary to use in hotels. Reserving a hotel room gives you the chance to practise writing a fax.

Breakfast all over the world contains two listening exercises detailing the eating habits of people all over the world.

Complaining is part of life, and at work we have to deal with complaints! Complaining about a product is a listening activity in which you listen and write your own letter of complaint.

There are three exercises to offer further practice of this area of grammar: Countable v uncountable nouns: definition and contrast, Uncountable nouns: other and Choosing countable or uncountable nouns.

Check your spelling of clothes vocabulary in Clothes. My favourite clothes is a listening activity where you have to match what you hear to the descriptions.

Expand your knowledge of the use of some and any in the two language exercises: Quantifiers and A, some, any. Practice much and many in the listening Patsy and Bob go camping, then play the game Skater Waiter for some fun practice of the questions How much and How many.

Page 50: Check in or carry on?

The book looks at business travel. In A business trip you have to rearrange the words to complete someone's 'To do' list before they go on a business trip.

Page 51: Emergency shopping

In the sports shop and In the post office are two listenings about shopping. In the post office is a two part activity so don't forget to do the second exercise after you've checked your answers to exercise one.

Expand your vocabulary by doing the Vocabulary Activity The Weather.

There's also a listening activity called The weather where you are. Listen to the weather forecast from around the world.

Finish off with a Poker Game. Try to make sentences about the weather or collect pairs of adjectives or nouns related to the weather. Be careful though - this is addictive!

Pages 53 - 56: Comparing the weather

Over the next four pages in the book you look at comparatives and superlatives. There are a number of exercises available in MEC to make sure you have a good understanding of this grammar. Spot the difference looks at comparative adjectives. Ask the pilot and Comparative and superlative adjectives look at both comparatives and superlatives.

There are also four Grammar Reference Units with grammar explanations of the rules and simple exercises for your reference.

Page 56: What's it like?
Prague vs London is a Listening Activity where you listen to people describing these two cities. What are they like? You choose the appropriate adjectives from their descriptions. How would you describe Hong Kong if you were asked What's it like?

Travel is part of business life. To help you talk about and understand language of travel there are two exercises, Travelling by public transport and Travelling in the UK which focus on vocabulary.

English is the language of air travel, and you need to know a lot of English expressions when you are travelling by plane. Holiday in Florida is an activity to build your vocabulary for air travel, and Travelling for work is a listening activity which will help you further with this area of language.

Page 68-69 Stranded by a strike

Travelling Tales is another listening activity which builds your vocabulary by identifying synonyms – words with the same meaning as some that you may already know.
