Course Aims

The core aim of this popular English course is to develop every aspect of your English by offering a balanced approach to speaking, writing, listening and reading. On the course, you will:

  • learn essential techniques and phrases for everyday situations
  • communicate with more confidence and fewer errors
  • improve your pronunciation
  • oncrease your vocabulary.

Demonstrating Progress

Assessment and counselling
Your teacher will be continually assessing you based on the core objectives of the course. You will be encouraged to reflect on your own performance with your teacher’s assistance. You will also be given regular language tests and written tasks. All of this will help you identify your strengths and areas of development, allowing your teacher to give you informed advice.

At the end of the course your teacher’s recommendation will determine whether you move to the next level.

Reports and certificates
At an established point in your course you will receive a report on your progress, areas for improvement and advice for future studies. You will receive a certificate at the end of the course if you have attended at least 75% of the classes and satisfactorily completed all relevant assessments.

Facilities for students

You will have free access to our self-study centre on the 3rd floor of our Admiralty centre. It contains a variety of materials, including CD-ROMs, videos, audiotapes and books.

Placement test and counselling

To register for your first British Council adult course you will take a placement test to assess your current level of English. A course counsellor will then help you select the course most suited to your needs and English level.
