FCE English
English courses for adults

Do you have a high standard of English yet want to further enhance it? Would you also like to develop your language skills, grammar and vocabulary? Are you ready to find out what your true level of English is?

If yes, then why not join our FCE English class here at British Council Hong Kong.

FCE (First Certificate in English) is an internationally recognised exam for upper intermediate students. By preparing for the FCE you will be able to:

  • better understand the main ideas in complex pieces of writing
  • effectively participate in conversations on a wide range of topics, expressing opinions and presenting arguments
  • produce clear, detailed writing, expressing opinions and explaining the advantages and disadvantages of different points of view.

For more information about FCE please visit our FCE page.

You will follow the FCE Gold course book, which will help you develop your grammar, vocabulary and language skills. This is useful even for students not planning to take the FCE examination. Take a look at the following sample pages to get a feel for the book:

Course Content

  • you will strengthen your understanding of grammatical structures through FCE language questions
  • you will systematically develop your vocabulary range, including common phrasal verbs
  • your reading and listening skills will improve by tackling the FCE Reading and Listening papers
  • you will have the opportunity to widen your written repertoire by completing FCE tasks
  • you will improve your speaking through a wide range of speaking practice activities.

Course Aims

For many students their language level frustratingly plateaus at upper intermediate level and they do not progress further. Preparing for an examination can be an effective way to hone your current language skills and so move your language level forward.

Demonstrating Progress

There is currently no formal assessment for this course.  However, you receive an attendance certificate if you attend at least 75% of lessons and complete assessments successfully.

To follow up the course you can take the First Certificate in English (FCE) which will allow you to undergo a formal, external assessment of your language proficiency.

Placement test and counselling

To register for your first British Council adult course you will need to take a placement test to assess your current level of English. A course counsellor will then help you select the course most suited to your needs and English level.
