About This Course

This course consists of two semesters (GE8A and GE8B). Our aim is to help you activate and extend your knowledge of English developing your overall ability to speak, listen, read and write about everyday topics.

Course Objectives

You will work towards the following learning outcomes:

Speaking

  • give a clear, well-structured presentation of a complex subject
  • argue a formal position convincingly, responding to questions and comments
  • give clear, detailed descriptions
  • participate fully in an interview, expanding and developing the point being discussed

Writing

  • express yourself with clarity and precision in personal correspondence
  • write clear, well-structured descriptions, imaginative texts and expositions of complex subjects
  • express yourself with clarity and precision in personal correspondence

Listening

  • follow complex interactions in group discussions and debates
  • follow lectures, discussions and debates
  • understand a range of recorded and broadcast audio material

Reading

  • identify the content and relevance of newspaper articles
  • understand in detail lengthy, complex texts on a range of topics
  • scan quickly through long and complex texts, locating relevant details

Course Content

The course book is Cutting Edge Advanced. Your teacher will select the most relevant material from the book and supplement it to make lessons relevant and stimulating.

Demonstrating Progress

Assessment and Counselling
During the course your teacher will set speaking and writing tasks in class and advise you on your progress. Near the end of the course there will be a progress test, in which you need to achieve at least 65%.

End of semester report and certificate
At the end of each semester you will receive a report on your progress, areas for improvement and advice for future studies. You will receive a certificate at the end of GE7B if you have attended at least 75% of the classes and satisfactorily completed all relevant assessments.
