About This Course
This course consists of two semesters (GE5A and GE5B). It will help you develop your overall ability to speak, listen, read and write about everyday topics.
Course Objectives
You will work towards the following learning outcomes:
Speaking
- give detailed accounts of experiences, describing feelings and reactions
- express opinion about abstract or cultural topics, such as music or films
- develop an argument
- carry out an interview
Writing
- write a short, simple essay on a topic of interest
- write a personal e-mail or letter giving news
- take telephone messages
- write a detailed description
Listening
- follow the main points of a discussion between native speakers
- follow a talk, interview or lecture on a familiar topic
- understand recorded or broadcast material
Reading
- understand the description of events, feelings and wishes in personal e-mails or letters
- scan longer texts in order to locate information
- identify the main conclusions in clearly argumentative texts
- understand clearly written instructions
Course Content
The course book is Inside Out Intermediate. Your teacher will select the most relevant material from the book and supplement it to make lessons relevant and stimulating.
Demonstrating Progress
Assessment and Counselling Your teacher will give you a number of assessed tasks based on the core objectives of the course. They will grade you for each task and from this, your homework and course tests, your teacher will be able to advise you about your progress and suggest a suitable course for the next semester. For semester B courses your performance and teacher’s recommendation will determine whether you move to the next level.
End of semester report and certificate At the end of each semester you will receive a report on your progress, areas for improvement and advice for future studies. You will receive a certificate at the end of GE5B if you have attended at least 75% of the classes and satisfactorily completed all relevant assessments.
