About This Course

This course consists of two semesters (GE4A and GE4B). It will help you develop your overall ability to speak, listen, read and write about everyday topics.

Course Objectives

You will work towards the following learning outcomes:

Speaking

  • use a questionnaire to carry out an interview
  • give a presentation on a familiar topic
  • describe dreams, hopes and ambitions
  • express and respond to feelings such as surprise or happiness

Writing

  • write a description of an event or recent trip
  • write personal letters describing experiences, feelings and events
  • write notes conveying simple information to friends

Listening

  • follow short talks on familiar topics
  • understand the main points of radio news bulletins
  • follow the main points of extended discussions

Reading

  • find and understand information in everyday texts such as letters and brochures
  • recognise significant points in newspaper articles
  • understand events, feelings and wishes in personal letters
  • understand instructions for a piece of equipment

Course Content

The course book is New Cutting Edge Pre-Intermediate. Your teacher will select the most relevant material from the book and supplement it to make lessons relevant and stimulating.

Demonstrating Progress

Assessment and Counselling
During the course your teacher will set speaking and writing tasks in class and advise you on your progress. Near the end of the course there will be a progress test, in which you need to achieve at least 65%.

End of semester report and certificate
At the end of each semester you will receive a report on your progress, areas for improvement and advice for future studies. You will receive a certificate at the end of GE4B if you have attended at least 75% of the classes and satisfactorily completed all relevant assessments.
