HKU, founded in 1911, is Hong Kong’s oldest university. It has evolved into a comprehensive international institution with 22,000 undergraduates and postgraduates and 10 different faculties covering architecture, arts, business and economics, dentistry, education, engineering, law, medicine, science, and social science. It is the only publicly-funded university on Hong Kong Island, with the main campus located in the Mid-Levels area. It is conveniently placed for the main business district and nightlife areas.
The university has a global network of partner institutions, with business and economics top choices for overseas students. Social science, politics, history and global studies are also popular. Professionally oriented subjects, such as dentistry, medicine and architecture, have special exchange arrangements. Credit-bearing undergraduate Cantonese and Putonghua language classes at different levels are available.
A major point of contact is the Office of International Student Exchange (OISE) which provides services on academic matters, information sessions, cultural adjustment and orientation programmes, and social activities for exchange students. Accommodation in nearby residential halls is available for exchange students and a buddy system is in operation.
A specially designed Global Lounge acts as a social hub bringing local and international students together. It contains 13 plasma televisions with access to international channels in a range of languages, newspapers from around the world, information about partner institutions and consulates, a coffee shop, a small gym, conference room and internet facilities.
