The Learning Applied Forum 2009 was held on 10th and 11th of February and attended by nearly 200 delegates to discuss skills for employability in the context of curriculum reforms for 14-19 year olds. The Forum provided a platform for dialogue between Hong Kong and the United Kingdom; the secondary and tertiary education sectors; policy makers, influencers and practitioners; and the education sector and employment sector.
Day One consisted of plenary and breakout sessions led by 12 speakers, hosted at the Institute of Vocational Education (IVE), Chai Wan Campus. The speakers showed the developments behind the reforms, the resulting curricula, the issues in practice and how the reforms are designed to meet the unprecedented evolution of the world's social and economic needs.
Day Two offered a smaller delegation institutional visits to Cyberport, Mission Covenant Glad Holm College and the IVE Kwun Tong campus. Along with viewing the facilities, the delegates witnessed first hand how the Applied Learning (ApL) curriculum is benefitting secondary students. A group of ApL student ambassadors gave confident presentations on their experience of the curriculum, in particular, how they make use of the vocational and technical teaching and state-of-the-art facilities of the IVE campus every week.
The Forum closed with a networking lunch and debriefing on Day Two at the Vocational Training Council’s Western Training Restaurant in Kowloon Bay.
We received very positive feedback throughout the event and in subsequent feedback. The success of this event provides a solid basis on which to continue the British Council's global Skills for Employability programme in this region.
