In this third year of FameLab Hong Kong, it was Hong Kong University of Science and Techology's turn to sweep up the awards.
On Saturday 19 November, HKUST student Colin Tsang, took home three FameLab awards - Grand Prize winner, Audience Choice and Video Favourite. The undergraduate student in biochemistry beat six other finalists to represent Hong Kong at the International FameLab Final in the UK next year.
HKUST also won the honour of "Best Institution" for sending the most number of contestants to FameLab Hong Kong. Professor Yeung, Adjunct Associate Professor from the Department of Chemistry of HKUST, received the award from Chief Curator of the Hong Kong Science Museum, Michael Wong.
In addition to Colin winning the grand prize, Emily Siu from HKUST was the 1st runner-up by explaining why helicopters can hover whilst airplanes cannot and Aneesha Acharya from University of Hong Kong was the 2nd runner-up who talked about how baby's deciduous teeth can be used to harvest stem cells to treat diseases like leukemia. Their clear explanation of the science and relevance to people's everyday lives made them part of the top three FameLab communicators.
FameLab Hong Kong is part of British Council's annual Science Alive programme in Hong Kong. The theme of this year's Science Alive is Living Chemistry to celebrate 2011 as the International Year of Chemistry. Also, Science Alive is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year along with the Hong Kong Science Museum.
