The British Council China is working in partnership with the China National Institute for Educational Research (SETC), the Chongqing Education Commission and the Global Action Plan UK to develop an online climate change teaching resource for use in junior and senior middle schools. Climate4Classrooms will focus on five topics: energy, waste, transport, water and food and will be adaptable to local issues in China.
Through a multi-lingual website, the project enables teachers of students aged 11+ to access interactive teaching tools based on the latest climate change data from world-renowned climate experts. Resources include over 150 graphics, student activities and case studies on the likely impact of climate change nationally and globally, as well as videos of climate experts bringing climate science to life.
The project aims to increase teachers'confidence and knowledge, enable young people aged 11+ to understand climate change as relevant to their own lives as local and global citizens, and provide opportunities for international exchange of ideas.
The primary aims of this online resource are to:
- Increase the capacity of teachers to communicate climate change knowledge and understanding through interactive teaching methods.
- Teach about climate change through five environmental themes which are based on UK sustainable education policies and teaching approaches.
- Support students to develop research based study that encourages and measure behaviour changes in the school setting to reduce the school’s carbon footprint.
