Details

Interested in getting students talking about controversial issues in science? 'Meet the Gene Machine' is designed to engage young people and teachers in debate around the social and ethical implications raised by advances in medical genetics. The event has two key elements: a mini-drama, followed by a lively discussion. The purpose of the mini-drama is to provide the audience with information on the science behind genetic screening and to introduce some of the key issues that arise from its use. Once the drama is finished the two presenters come out of character and begin to involve the audience in discussions relating to genetic testing. A number of different techniques will be used to encourage discussion among the participants. The aim is to probe each individual’s opinions and to encourage them to consider and think reflectively about a controversial issue in science.
