The theme of the Hong Kong Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture 2008 is Re-fabricating City, with the intention to exhibit innovative projects and strategies that work with and evolve from a given urban context.
The British Council is supporting UK architect Alex Haw’s award-winning project “Work / Space / Ply / Time: the Urbantine” at the biennale.
Alex Haw runs the multidisciplinary collaborative practice atmos, which explores architectural ideas across a range of media. Educated at The Bartlett (UCL) and Princeton, he has taught at the Architectural Association in London and Cambridge University.
His W/S/P/T project densely compacts a multitude of customised surfaces which exploit every cubic inch of available volume in a workspace. Everything slots or folds together and packs as tightly as possible, asking for discovery and invention within the dense communal space. The highly-customisable kit of parts uses only two materials: plywood and polyethylene.
Given Hong Kong’s super dense context and compact living standards, this UK design is very relevant to the daily lives of Hong Kong city dwellers. The built work will be located in a prominent location in the upper courtyard of the Central Police Station.
