1/F, British Council
Exhibition period: 2-20 December 2006

The closing event of our month-long DesignUK festivities, In Search of Gingers...A Work in Progress, showcased paintings of the fabulous Zingiberaceae (ginger) family by ginger devotee Sandy Ross Sykes. Her paintings in this unusual subject won the prestigious RCA/Thames and Hudson book prize, and examples of her work are exhibited in the USA and UK.

Having graduated in 2004 from The Royal College of Art in London, Sandy Ross Sykes has based herself in Hong Kong whilst touring the region painting species of the Zingiberaceae (ginger) family.  With over 1,200 different species of Zingibers in the Asian region and Hong Kong, this botanical illustration exhibition has many unusual examples of Gingers growing in the wild. Ross Sykes is particularly interested in the conservation of this endangered genus.  She believes that by showing her paintings throughout the region, public awareness will be raised and focused on the plight of this fascinating species.
