Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
European Film Festival 2012

The British Council supports the European Film Festival 2012 by presenting the closing film Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, adapted from a renowned UK author John le Carré’s classic bestselling novel of the same title. Set in 1973, the Cold War continues to damage international relations. George Smiley (Gary Oldman), a recently retired MI6 agent, is drawn back into the murky field of espionage after the failure of operation led by the head of the Circus. Tasked with investigating which of his trusted former colleagues has chosen to betray their country, Smiley narrows his search to four suspects - all experienced, urbane, successful agents - but past histories, rivalries and friendships make it far from easy to pinpoint the man who is eating away at the heart of the British establishment.

This film was an entrant in the 68th Venice International Film Festival, and was nominated for seven awards at the British Independent Film Awards. It was also nominated for 11 awards at the BAFTA 2012. Gary Oldman receives his first Oscar nomination for best actor award.
