The terms "You" and "User" as used herein refer to all individuals and/or entities accessing this web site for any reason.

Copyright and use of material

The British Council authorises you to view and download a single copy of the material on www.britishcouncil.org.hk (the "Web Site") solely for your personal, non-commercial use.

The contents of this Web Site, such as text, graphics, images, logos, button icons, software and other "Material", are protected under both United Kingdom and foreign copyright, trademark and other laws. All Material is the property of the British Council or its content suppliers or clients. The compilation (meaning the collection, arrangement and assembly) of all content on this Web Site is the exclusive property of the British Council and protected by UK and international copyright laws. Unauthorised use of the Material may violate copyright, trademark, and other laws. You must retain all copyright, trademark, service-mark and other proprietary notices contained in the original Material on any copy you make of the Material. You may not sell or modify the Material or reproduce, display, publicly perform, distribute, or otherwise use the Material in any way for any public or commercial purpose. By disclosing your personal information to us, by correspondence or over the telephone, you consent to the collection, storage and processing of your personal information by the British Council in the manner set out in our privacy rules, which complies with the UK's 1998 Data Protection Act.

Privacy rules

If you do provide personal information by applying for a job, we will ensure that it is securely managed according to the following standards:

  • We will ensure, according to strict standards of security and confidentiality, any information our applicants submit to us in their application for jobs.
  • We will permit only authorised employees, to have access to that information. Employees who violate our privacy rules will be subject to our standard disciplinary procedures.
  • We will not reveal applicant information to any external organisation unless you have specifically agreed that we can do so, or are required by law.
  • We will comply with all relevant legislation that affects our applicants in terms of data protection.
  • We will not use or share - internally or externally - personally identifiable information that could be used in a discriminatory selection process, which contravenes our Equal Opportunity policy.

Liability

Although every care has been taken to ensure that the information on this web site is accurate, the British Council accepts no liability for any errors, omissions or statements made. Job descriptions and information are provided for guidance only and are not intended to form any part of any contract of employment.

The Council reserves the right to change information, specifications and descriptions of advertised vacancies and services. We will do our best to correct errors and omissions as quickly as practicable after being notified of them. However, the Council does not accept liability for any indirect or consequential loss arising out of the use of the web site. This Liability section applies only to the extent permitted by law.

Acceptable use of this web site

Users may not use the Web Site in order to transmit, distribute, store or destroy material (a) in violation of any applicable law or regulation, (b) in a manner that will infringe the copyright, trademark, trade secret or other intellectual property rights of others or violate the privacy, publicity or other personal rights of others, or (c) that is defamatory, obscene, threatening, abusive or hateful.

Web site security rules:

Users are prohibited from violating or attempting to violate the security of the Web Site, including, without limitation,

Violations of system or network security may result in civil or criminal liability. The British Council will investigate occurrences which may involve such violations and may involve, and co-operate with, law enforcement authorities in prosecuting users who are involved in such violations.

Specific prohibited uses:

The Web Site must be used only for lawful purposes, by individuals seeking employment and career information. The British Council specifically prohibits any use of the Web Site, and all users agree not to use the Web Site, for any of the following:

  • Posting any incomplete, false or inaccurate biographical information or information which is not your own accurate CV (living individual seeking employment on a full-time or part-time basis on his or her own behalf).
  • Posting any franchise, pyramid scheme, "club membership", distributorship or sales representative agency arrangement or other business opportunity which requires an up front or periodic payment, pays commissions only (no significant salary), requires recruitment of other members, sub-distributors or sub-agents.
  • Deleting or revising any material posted by any other person or entity.
  • Using any device, software or routine to interfere or attempt to interfere with the proper working of this Web Site or any activity being conducted on this site.
  • Taking any action which imposes an unreasonable or disproportionately large load on this Web Site's infrastructure.

Notwithstanding anything to the contrary contained herein, using or attempting to use any engine, software, tool, agent or other device or mechanism (including without limitation browsers, spiders, robots, avatars or intelligent agents) to navigate or search this Web Site other than the search engine and search agents available from the British Council on this Web Site and other than generally available third party web browsers (e.g., Netscape Navigator, Microsoft Explorer).

Attempting to decipher, decompile, disassemble or reverse engineer any of the software comprising or in any way making up a part of the Web Site.

User submissions:

As a user, you are responsible for your own communications and are responsible for the consequences of their posting. You must not, and by using this Web Site you agree not to do the following things:

The British Council does not represent or guarantee the truthfulness, accuracy, or reliability of communications posted by users or endorse any opinions expressed by users. If notified by a user of communications which allegedly do not conform to these Terms and Conditions, the British Council may investigate the allegation and determine in good faith and its sole discretion whether to remove or request the removal of the communication. The British Council has no liability or responsibility to users for performance or nonperformance of such activities. The British Council reserves the right to expel users and prevent their further access to the Web Site for violating the Terms and Conditions or the law and the right to remove communications which are abusive, illegal, or disruptive.

The British Council may take any action with respect to user-submitted information that it deems necessary or appropriate in its sole discretion if it believes it may create liability for the British Council or may cause the British Council to lose (in whole or in part) the services of its ISPs or other suppliers. By submitting content to any public or non-public area of the Web Site, you grant the British Council and its affiliates the loyalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, sublicenseable (through multiple tiers), non-exclusive right (including any moral rights) and license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, create derivative works from, distribute, communicate to the public, perform and display the content (in whole or in part) worldwide and/or to incorporate it in other works in any form, media, or technology now known or later developed, for the full term of any rights that may exist in such content.
