FAQ - ELT Network
Find out more about the ELT Network here
Do I have to pay anything to join the ELT Network or attend a workshop?
No.  All of our events are free-of-charge.
What is the ELT Network and how is it different from teacher training courses at the British Council?
The ELT Network is a project (not a teaching centre course) designed to facilitate networking amongst Hong Kong teachers working in primary and secondary schools for whom English is an additional language.  We provide six workshops a year on innovative teaching methodology.  After each workshop, you receive a certificate of attendance that you can add to your continuing professional development portfolio.  As well as this, we have a modest webpage that provides information on ideas about teaching and learning, lesson plans, interviews and a workshop sign-up facility.
What type of workshops do you offer?
We provide a mixture of workshops aimed at either primary or secondary teachers. Titles have included creative story writing for primaries, multiple intelligences, webquests for secondaries, project-based learning and vocabulary learning for primaries. Workshops are advertised on the webpage, where you can sign-up free of charge as long as you are a member (also free of charge). We provide a buffet meal for teachers attending as we appreciate that teachers come directly from work and will not have had time for dinner. We also encourage teachers to use this as an opportunity for networking with colleagues working in different districts of Hong Kong.
What's expected of me if I attend a workshop?
No prior knowledge of any area is expected, although we find that teachers bring a wealth of knowledge and experience with them.   We find that what teachers enjoy most about the workshops is the practical element to them where they get to experiment with methods and techniques.  All you need to bring is an open mind, a positive approach, and plenty of good humour and energy.
What type of articles do you write on your ELT Network website?
We try to mirror our workshop content on the website, so if we have a workshop coming up about vocabulary learning, we write an article on best practice in vocabulary teaching and learning on the website.  You'll also find downloadable lesson plans that link in thematically with previous workshops, which indicate age and level of the group, aims, procedures and provide supplementary materials for the lesson itself.
Are there any practical ideas on the website that can help me with my day to day job?
Each month we have a new lesson plan idea which gives you a complete lesson plan plus handouts for you to download and use with your class.  Each lesson plan gives you an easy-to-follow procedure, starting with information such as the topic, what age it is aimed at and what materials you'll need, followed by a step by step outline of what to do in the class.  Any handouts needed for the lesson are attached to the lesson plan.  All lesson plans are archived on the website, so even if you have only just become an ELTN member, you can still access all the previous lesson plans.
