The Boyd Neel Orchestra on British Council tour, arriving in Broken Hill, Australia
Australia, New Zealand and Pacific
We started working in Australia and New Zealand in 1941, and appointed representatives to both countries in 1947, following requests from the two Prime Ministers.  We expanded into the Pacific when we opened our office in Fiji in 1950.  Read more about our work in the region on this page.

 OLD VIC DOWN UNDER
In 1948, we organised a tour by London's Old Vic Theatre Company to Australia and New Zealand.  The company, led by Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh, covered nearly 5,000 miles and played to enthusiastic audiences of nearly half a million people.

Work in the South Pacific
We arrived in the Pacific in 1950 when we opened an office in Fiji.  Financial pressures caused us to withdraw in 1960, but we reopened in the early 1980s, when our office was the base for development work and scholarship programmes in the South Pacific.
