Talking English

Welcome to the British Council Greece's latest edition of Talking English - our bi-monthly newsletter for English language teachers.

Our aim is to help you keep up to date with global ELT news and local events organised by the British Council. Find links to useful websites and articles, online teaching resources, and details of events and training opportunities in Greece.

If you have a friend or colleague you think would be interested in receiving Talking English, forward this edition to them and they can register online.

 English for the Games
With less than half a year to go till the London Games begin, why not have a look at these materials for your classes? There are lesson plans and activities at different language proficiency levels on themes such as the Olympic and Paralympic sports and values.
 Dickens 2012
There are many celebrations for the bicentenary of Dickens' birth this year. On TeachingEnglish you can find a range of teaching materials for higher levels and also related videos and news of Dickens events in the UK.
 Support for teacher associations
We have added a new course to our page for teacher associations: How to organise a face-to-face training programme. It's free, though you have to register to take this and the other courses, which also include a course on organising online training.
 Research Papers
Our new series on the big issues in ELT begins with a paper on Global Practices in Teaching English to Young Learners. You can download this paper for free to read about the research and five key recommendations for future action to support teaching English to young learners.
 Tools for teachers
Our special tools for teachers are now all available in one place on TeachingEnglish. You can find posters to download, an interactive phonemic chart, a flashcard maker, an ELT glossary and more. And in 2012 we'll be adding more, so watch out!
 Digital literacy
The latest in our Seminars series sees Gavin Dudeney answer the question 'What is digital literacy?' He also talks about its implications for us as teachers, and suggests - in a pdf download - lots of practical ideas for you to try out in your own classrooms.
