THE CITY SPEAKS EXHIBITION

We're delighted to invite you to The City Speaks exhibition, which we're organising in collaboration with Maslaha with the kind support of City Link as part of our global programme Our Shared Europe.

The city inspires, recollects, provokes and empowers. Cities have brought together some of the world's greatest thinkers and have provided fertile ground for progressive thought, becoming the stage for some of the world's biggest political, economic and social events. The city is also a place of conflict and challenge, where differences become stark in their proximity.

Yet these diverse influences have also resulted in the sharing of knowledge, the exploration of new ideas, and brilliant innovation and creativity. The imprints of such inspiration – captured through art and creative expression in many forms including architecture, film, music, literature and theatre – are left by a variety of eras, cultures, geographical areas and faiths.

The City Speaks exhibition explores how individuals and communities have been inspired by cities and how they in turn have changed the places where they have lived through various forms of creative expression.

The exhibition focuses exclusively on European cities and has already travelled to Slovenia, Denmark, Switzerland and Germany. It is divided into four sections, each culminating in an interactive activity where you'll be asked to contribute your opinions and ideas on the topic covered in the section. You'll also have the opportunity to share your thoughts on how you'd like to change your city and shape it for the future.

The exhibition soundtrack is by Dave Randall, guitarist and producer.

It shows us that we are not alone. Thanks to people’s passion, over 50 Before I Die walls have been created in over 10 languages and in more than 20 countries.

EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS: SPYROMILIOU ARCADE THROUGH YOUR EYES
The workshops are aimed at primary school students and will be led by Maria Leonida of KARPOS (Centre of Educational Activity & Intercultural Communication).

  • Workshop for 1st–2nd grade primary school children
Using Vana's Xenou's aerial sculpture 'Perasma', which adorns the ceiling of Spyromiliou Arcade, as inspiration, children will be invited to look at the arcade from a different angle. They will take photos of the sculpture and using these, they will try to reproduce the image on a one-metre piece of paper. The other half of their classmates will draw the outline of the statue. The three versions (the sculpture itself, children’s images and the outline of the sculpture), will be made into a short video clip.

  • Workshop for 3rd–6th grade primary school children
Which elements of Spyromiliou Arcade make the biggest impression on us? Can we take photos of the arcade and send them to someone who can't visit it? Which photos will we choose? What sounds can we add? The children will make a short documentary representing their own view of Spyromiliou Arcade.

When: 21, 23, 29 & 30 November 2012 (09.30–11.30)
Where: City Link – Spyromiliou Arcade, Panepistimiou, Voukourestiou, Stadiou & Amerikis Streets, 105 64 Athens (the arcade can be accessed from Voukourestiou Street)
