Fifty years on from the Treaty of Rome and Europe is redefining itself by attempting unification in the economic, political, social and cultural spheres. For the first time in human history, a unification process is in progress, not under the dominance of a single power, but as an open invitation to reach a common identity and common goals. Clearly a common vision of culture, values, principles and approaches will greatly enhance the unification process. The European unification process is most often discussed in 'technical' terms. In the search for a new European identity, it is therefore important to try and open up the discussion, and to reassess the history of Europe in terms of science, philosophy and theology. The Does Europe have a soul? conference aims at rediscovering the European phenomenon in its fullness by exploring the dynamic interplay between analytical thought and metaphysical enquiry, between the Christian tradition and the secular drive, and between the integrity of the human person and the 'downgrading' of human values. The conference is organised in collaboration with the National Hellenic Research Foundation and the European Research Network (Science-Religion interaction in the 21st century SR21), supported by the British Council. Distinguished guest speakers Michel Cazenave (Radio France Culture), David Martin (London School of Economics), and Loukas Tsoukalis (Athens University, Head of ELIAMEP) will present their own views and open up a public debate exploring the question: Does Europe have a soul? The discussion will be facilitated by Pavlos Tsimas, journalist.
