SECRETS OF MENTAL MATHS BY DR ARTHUR BENJAMIN

Dr Arthur Benjamin has been combining his two passions – mathematics and magic – on stage for the past 30 years and thousands of people all over the world have attended his 'mathemagician' performances. Don’t miss the special presentation we're organising in collaboration with HUB Science!

Dr Arthur Benjamin is a Professor of Mathematics at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California, and is currently a visiting professor at Oxford University.

He is also a professional magician and in his entertaining and fast-paced performance, Dr. Benjamin will demonstrate how to mentally add and multiply numbers faster than a calculator, how to work out the day of the week of any date in history and other amazing feats of mind.

He has written several books, including Secrets of Mental Math, and his DVD courses include The Joy of Mathematics and Discrete Mathematics. He has received national awards for his research, writing and teaching. He is winner of the National Teaching Award from the Mathematical Association of America and was listed by the Princeton Review as one America's Top 300 Professors.

Dr Benjamin has appeared on many television and radio programmes including the BBC's What Makes A Genius? (with the mathematician Marcus Du Sautoy) and NBC's The Today Show. He has been profiled in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, USA Today, Scientific American, Discover, Omni, Esquire, People Magazine and Reader's Digest. In their 'Best of America' issue, Reader's Digest named him 'America's Best Math Whiz'.

In 1997, Dr Benjamin applied his talents to the game of backgammon and won the American Backgammon Tour.

His talk Arthur Benjamin does 'Mathemagic' at the TED 2005 conference is one of the five most popular videos on www.ted.com with almost five million views.
