NUCLEAR TECHNOLOGY

An answer to or a reason for our problems? Open debate

We live in a world that welcomed the new millennium full of concerns about its energy resources and the future of the natural environment. As humanity tries to work out ways to ensure that all its energy demands will be satisfied for centuries to come, while at the same time protecting the environment from human activities, the issue of nuclear technology is back at the heart of the debate.

Nuclear technology, while employed by some and demonised by others, today produces today more than 15% of the world's electricity with that percentage reaching 80% in countries like France, and research on new nuclear technologies such as fusion are strongly supported and funded by national governments around the world.

The present debate will host scientists from two neighbouring countries that have taken opposite stands on the matter and both sides will use arguments of technology, economics, environmental impact and safety for the phasing out or the extended use of this technology.

Join six young scientists from Greece and Bulgaria, who will share their views based on their area of research. Find out what they have to say about nuclear and renewable energy sources, radiation and radiology, and contaminated soil and compromised migration. Explore with them the various facets of this complex issue and have a say in forming public opinion.

The discussion will be moderated by journalist and author George Zarkadakis.
