EXPLORING THE SOLAR SYSTEM EXHIBITION

Exploring the Solar System is an exciting, interactive British Council worldwide touring exhibition on British space research achievements. The exhibition has been designed to resemble the architecture of space probes and space stations. With striking graphics and a walk-through tunnel display, Exploring the Solar System guides visitors through the science behind the missions and gives you the opportunity to have your questions about planets, comets and asteroids answered.

WRAP-AROUND ACTIVITIES

Lectures from distinguished speakers from the UK and Greece

On Monday 10 January 2005 at 18.00, we urge you to visit the Eugenides Foundation and attend the presentation of Professor David Southwood, Science Director of the European Space Agency. The Professor has published over 200 publications and scientific articles. One of his most challenging tasks was to head the team that built the magnetometer for the Cassini Saturn orbiter of the NASA/ESA Cassini-Huygens mission. Other invited speakers are E. Rammos, executive member of ESA, X. Mousas, Associate Professor of the Dept. of Astronomy, University of Athens.

On Monday 24 January 2005 at 18.00, the distinguished physicist and author of Black Holes, Wormholes and Time Machines, Dr J S Al-Khalili from the University of Surrey, Department of Physics, will present and read from his work at the Evgenides Foundation. If you think the cosmos is too vast and its mathematics too complex to understand, Jim Al-Khalili will prove you wrong! He belongs to a new genre of excellent and accessible science writers whose books are aimed at readers who don't have a background in science but are interested in the answers to questions such as: What was there before the Big Bang? What does the inside of a black hole look like? Does the universe have an edge? Other speakers: Spyridon E. Tzamarias, Hellenic Open University, School of Science & Technology and Nikos Trakas, Applied Mathematics and Physics Dept, National University of Athens. Simultaneous translation will be provided.

Performance & monologue at Theatre Roes
On Tuesday 25 January at 19.30 Jim Al-Khalili will give a talk on stage and answer your questions on quantum mechanics at Roes Theatre. Prior to the performance of Peter Parnell's QED: a play, inspired by the writings of Richard Feynman , translated by Yannis Milios and Georgios Kotanidis. The latter is the distinguished actor playing the role of Richard Feynman. Admission free.

Jim Al-Khalili's Black Holes, wormholes and time machines is available in Greece from Travlos Publications. Quantum Mechanics is currently being translated and will be available from June 2005.

When: 25 January 2005
Where: Roes Theatre, 16 Iakhou street, Gazi, 19.30 hours

Speech in Thessaloniki
In Thessaloniki, friends of quantum physics will have the chance to enjoy the well known author who will talk about the magic of the quantum world with the opportunity of the forthcoming greek publication of his book Quantum: a guide for the perplexed.

Professor Yannis Seiradakis, department of Astronomy and Astrophysics, Aristotle University will facilitate the talk.

When: Wednesday 26 January 2005
Where: Xyloyrgeio tou Mylou, 56 Andreou Georgiou, Thessaloniki, 20.00 hours. Admission free.

ROVERBOT CHALLENGE
Τhere will also be an opportunity to take up the British Council RoverBot Challenge! The RoverBot Challenge is designed to bring the technology, engineering and vision of space projects to life. Workshops last an hour and involve up to 30 participants, working in teams of two, who compete to create the smartest robot to solve the challenge. The tasks promote teamwork, the analytical and critical skills needed to plan, build and implement a realistic simulation of a robotic mission to Mars.

Sessions schedule:
Dates and times of the ROVERBOT CHALLENGE workshops:

21–23 January 2005

11.30–12.30
